摘要:
A model for the prediction of rates of dehydration of Chemically Bound Moisture of Gibbsite is proposed. The theoretical dehydration rates evaluated from the model are compared with experimental values. The correlation between the experimental data and theoretically predicted values is found to be satisfactory. The curves obtained for differential thermal analysis of Gibbsite are found to resemble the DTA curves predicted theoretically using the proposed rate equations.

摘要:
Drying is an important operation in the wet processing methods of food. The prohibitory factor in using a dryer at small scale or cottage industries level in developing countries is its high initial cost and scarcity of energy. An effort has been made to solve this problem by developing a tray type natural convection dryer costing about US $ 462 which can dry various food products. The tests conducted for drying of redgram, soydal (split soybean) and soyflakes from initial moisture content of 48.83, 62.80 and 30%, respectively, showed that drying time was 18, 15 and 6 hours with the thermal efficiencies of 17.32, 26.43 and 11.85 per cent. The cost of the dryer operation per shift of 8 hours was determined to be about $ 1.70.

摘要:
Drying rates of cereals have a significant influence on the drying capacity of dryers. Drying rates are influenced by the variety and type of cereal, past history of the grain, maturity at harvest and the harvest method. The effect of the last two parameters on the drying rate of wheat was investigated by drying a single-kernel-thick layer of wheat in an experimental dryer. The laboratory results indicated that grain in the swath had a higher drying rate than grain standing in the field on a particular day of harvest. The effect of maturity or harvest date on the drying rate did not show any particular trend. In the field, the grain in the swath dried faster than grain standing in the field.

摘要:
Drying by heating is the most common method that has as its primary objective the removal of moisture, with the attendant structural, mechanical, thermal, biological and other property changes being significant as well. The extent to which these objectives are achieved is a function of the design process parameters such as the material, temperature, moisture content, and the duration of the process.

摘要:
Application of vibrational techniques for physical processing of granular materials has found widespread acceptance in the food industry. This paper will review such applications in feeding, conveying, cooling, drying, agglomeration (or instantization) and milling. Various types of vibratory equipment will be discussed with special emphasis on drying and agglomeration. Areas for further R & D will be identified in view of the very limited understanding of the transport phenomena occuring in such equipment.

摘要:
A summary is presented of a long teaching experiment to incorporate principles of process design in a chemical engineering science course. Students are assigned real world dryer design problems following a series of lectures clarifying the basic terminology, psychrometry and principles of drying. Selected references relevant to specific dryer design problems are also provided. The instructor and teaching assistants act as consultants to the design groups consisting of up to six students. This paper will refer to authors' recent experiences with this assignment using design of spouted bed dryers for grains as illustration.

摘要:
Mathematical modelling of drying processes as well as dryers has become an active and challenging area of research internationally. Despite the volume of literature published and continuing to appear on this subject, much remains to be accomplished in view of the intrinsic complexities associated with coupled heat, mass and momentum transfer with or without phase change occurring in porous media which are often deformable as well. Characterization of the solid media is still a major obstacle to modelling of drying. Since industrial drying is increasingly carried out using several modes of heat transfer (e.g. convection coupled wih conduction or microwave or infrared heating modelling of drying or dryers will remain an important research area in the years to come.
