摘要:
The creep behaviour of materials used in nuclear reactors, gas turbines and in electrical power plant is discussed in terms of the underlying physical processes. Our understanding of fatigue is less good, but it is possible to give qualitative reasons for particular fatigue characteristics of various engineering materials. Finally, the development of new materials is mentioned.

There has bean increasing interest in the use of and methods of generating high magnetic fields, which has been further stimulated by the discovery of hard superconductors. It is technically feasible but likely to be very costly to generate steady magnetic fields of about 400 kiloOersteds using conventional means. The use of superconductors seems limited, on thermodynamical grounds, with known materials to fields up to about 220 kiloOersteds. Beyond about 450 kiloOersteds the pulsed field technique will remain the only possible one for a long time to come. The pulses shorten in duration as the field intensity increases. Already fields of about 107Oersteds can be produced lasting for about a microsecond.

The history of absolute measurements of gravity is mentioned and the reasons for making absolute measurements are indicated. The principles and main advantages and difficulties of the main method—reversible pendulum, free fall, symmetrical free motion—are discussed and examples of each method are described. Problems of comparison of different determinations and of estimating systematic errors are considered.

摘要:
The development of a sensitive method for the detection of holes in silver bromide crystals has made possible the study of their properties. The method is based on the destruction of a thin deposit of silver by the bromine formed when photoexcited holes migrate to the surface of a silver bromide crystal. The application of a photographic developer allows the quantitative determination of 1015holes per cm2. Different variants of this method have been applied to measure the lifetime and the drift mobility of photoholes, well as their dependence on the temperature. The diffusion coefficient at room temperature was also evaluated. All results pertaining to the properties of holes in silver bromide seem to fit a unified interpretation if one assumes that free holes generated on exposure are soon neutralized to form rather stable complexes.
