摘要:
The breaking strength of a real solid is not determined directly by the interatomic forces but by the properties of the imperfections that the solid contains. To be very strong a solid must resist both pltlstic yielding and brittle cracking. One material cannot normally resist both types of failure. Strong metals are designed to resist plastic yielding. Modern strong composite materials can be devised, in which brittle substances are used and a fibrous microstructure designed to arrest crack propagation.

The radio and optical characteristics of quasi-stellar radio sources are described and contrasted with those of radio galaxies. It is shown how the synchrotron hypothesis of the radio emission from those objects can explain many of the features of their radio spectra. Once a consistent model for the evolution of quasi-stellar radio sources and radio galaxies is sought many difficulties are encountered, particularly during the early stages when the radiation density is very great. However, the present observational data allow several important conclusions to be drawn about the evolution of quasi-stellar radio sources and radio galaxies in general.

Measurements of the Faraday magneto-optical effect and of optical absorption in magnetic garnet crystals and films are reviewed. Earlier work was restricted to measurements in the visible spectrum; these measurements showed that the transparency was sufficient to allow magnetic domains to be studied in relatively thick slabs. Within the last year or so interest has been renewed in extending magneto-optical measurements beyond the visible spectrum. In particular, extremely low absorptions are found in the wavelength range of approximately 1–5 microns. Thie work is, in no small way, spurred by the possibility of developing a light-beam modulator using the Faraday effect in this wavelength range. Recent measurements at very short wavelengths using garnet films are also reported. By extending the short wavelength measurements to 3000 Å, about two orders of magnitude increase in Fareday rotation and optical absorption are observed, compared with the visible spectrum measurements.

Electric currents in solids are usually associated with the presence of electrons which are free to move under the influence of a field. In most cases these free current carriers exist in the charge neutral material. In this article the introduction of excess charge is discussed and it is shown how such charge can carry a current. The use of space-charge conduction as a tool in the study of defects and surfaces is discussed. The simultaneous injection of positive and negative charge at opposite electrodes is also considered. The bearing of space-charge conduction on device technology is reviewed.
