摘要:
The actinide elements are now sufficiently well understood to enable clearer analogies to be established between their properties and those of rare-earth and transitional elements. Research in the past decade has revealed systematic variations in bonding properties such as melting point, transport properties such as resistivity and electronic properties such as specific heat. The earlier members of the series now are seen to have not only a transitional element type of behaviour but one in which the 5f-electrons apparently make a substantial contribution to bonding. There are also important differences between the behaviour of the heavier actinides and those expected from rare earth elements.

摘要:
A number of new features appear in elastic collisions between atoms when one of the colliding systems is a positive ion. An account is given fist of some of these features, due to the long-range polarization force, which arise whether or not the ion and atom are of the same species. When they are of the same species symmetrical charge transfer may occur without change of internal energy and this leads to a number of further interference effects, the nature of which are described in general semi-classical theoretical terms. An account is then given of experiments which have confirmed the nature and existence of these effects.

摘要:
The thermoelectric power of metals and alloys is a relatively easily measured physical property that has become increasingly valuable in recent years for the information it can yield on electron and phonon transport processes. It is a particularly sensitive property for investigating dilute alloys, the effect of transition metal impurities in metals, and magnetic ordering. Links with other transport properties are provided by the use of the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Matthiesson rule in the basic theory. This review covers recent developments in the use of thermoelectric power as a research tool.

摘要:
The amount of smoke and sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere, as given by the National Survey on Air Pollution, is considered in relation to the source of these pollutants and the processes of dispersion or deposition. The amount of SO2in the air is much less, in relation to the output from stacks, than the amount of smoke and this is considered primarily due to the rapid absorption of SO2at the ground surface.

摘要:
The current flow between two (normal) metal electrodes, separated by a vacuum gap or an insulating layer, is considered from a general point of view as a process of electron transits through and over a potential energy barrier. The main results of a unified theory of field and thermionic emission, which takes into account the band structure of the insulator, are discussed. Experiments confirming the theory both for the cases of electron emission in vacuum and in some insulators are also considered. Certain directions of future work on experimental tests of the independent-electron model for the emission process are suggested.
