摘要:
The Mössbauer effect, the recoilless absorption and emission of gamma rays by nuclei embedded in solids, has its origin in the properties of the solid state. The nature of this connection is dealt with in some detail and the various effects of the crystalline environment on the nuclear energy levels is described. The importance of these effects as contributions to the study of the physical and chemical properties of crystals is discussed, and applications which depend on the intrinsic energy resolution of the effect are described. The recoilless nuclear resonant scattering and diffraction of gamma rays is also dealt with in some detail.

The paper begins with a general discussion of the properties of elastic liquids and with the use of models, consisting of springs and dashpots, to describe their behaviour. Next the linear and non-linear behaviour of these liquids are described together with some of the more striking observed properties. Experimental measurements are next discussed. The paper ends with a brief account of theoretical work that has been done on elastic liquids.

Of all the economic minerals that exist on or below the sea-floor only the fuels (oil, gas and coal) and the detrital deposits hold out any positive gain for the immediate future. The location and examination of each type of deposit requires the application of some branch of physics to the geological situation. For oil and gas prospecting, geophysical techniques (seismic, gravity and magnetic methods) have been long established, but exploration for detrital minerals requires a new approach to the subject. It is probable that partial solutions to the problem can be provided by each of a wide variety of physical considerations: the sum total of these (hydrodynamics, acoustics, electrics and magnetics) would give a reasonable description of the deposit.

The term ‘electrojet’ is frequently used to describe the intense bands of electric curent which flow at certain times in the earth's ionosphere at an altitude of about 100 km. Two main forms of electrojet current are distinguished; an equatorial electrojet which flows during the daylight hours in a narrow band of latitudes centred on the magnetic equator, and an auroral electrojet which flows during the main phese of magnetic storms in auroral regions. Both are accompanied by abnormally large changes in the geomagnetic field components as measured at the earth's surface. This article reviews the main features of the two forms of electrojet and discusses the present theories for their origin. Ionospheric irregularities are associated with both types of electrojet, and the experimental evidence so far accumulated indicates that these are produced by plane plasma waves generated by a two-stream instability in the plasma and travelling with the acoustic velocity of about 360 m s−1.
