摘要:
Properties of common engineering materials should be considered in the light of particular requirements. One such requirement occurs in design for minimum weight when materials can be more properly assessed on the basis of a figure of merit which involves the density as well as the normal mechanical properties. It is shown that, for compression members, the structure efficiency varies as the inverse square of the density so that greater benefits may be obtained by decreasing density than by increasing the strength or stiffness. Some applications are briefly considered.

摘要:
The mechanical excitation of the mechanism of the ear results in a response pattern on the basilar membrane contained in the cochlea of the inner ear. In turn, the sensitive elements carried by the basilar membrane set a train of neural signals travelling along the nervous pathway to the cortex of the brain but, in the course of their travel, these signals become modified at four junction regions known as synapses. In this way, the necessary information is abstracted from the mechenical pattern of vibration on the basilar membrane for the brain to arrive at a decision regarding the nature of the source exciting the ear. An account is given of the anatomical and physiological features of the ear and the nature of nerve conduction as well as the experimental investigations which have contributed to our present knowledge of hearing function.

摘要:
Holography is a two-stage process of photography using coherent light from a laser to illuminate the scene. In the first stage a hologram is formed by combining the light scattered from the object and the direct laser beam on a photographic plate. In the second stage a three-dimensional image is reconstructed without the use of lenses, by directing the laser beam through the hologram. Applications of holography include information storage, recording of images in depth, the use of holograms as optical elements, and as a means of performing precise interferometric measurements on three-dimensional objects of any shape and surface finish.

摘要:
A survey is made of some of the major researches on ocean waves of the last 25 years. Starting with the introduction of the wave spectrum by Barber and Ursell and their observations of the decrease in period of swell waves arriving on the Cornish coast, which established the predominant linearity of the propagation of storm-generated waves across the ocean, we proceed to the more precise and ambitious experiments in the Pacific by Munk, Snodgrass and others. The latter work identified the arrival in California of waves generated in the Indian Ocean, nearly half-way round the world, and developed into a detailed study of the attenuation of swell as it travels along a great circle path from beyond New Zealand to Alaska. A summary is given of some basic aspects of the new theory of nonlinear scattering in water waves, and finally, instrumental techniques and theory involved in the study of waves in the North Atlantic Ocean for forecasting purposes are reviewed in simple terms.

Liquids can, under certain conditions, sustain quite large tensions. In this paper an account is given of experiments which have been performed to subject liquids to various rates of stressing, namely, static experiments, dynamic experiments and ultrasonic stressing. This is followed by a discussion of the theoretical work which has been done on the tensile strength of liquids. The paper ends with an account of recent work and an assessment of the present state of the subject.

When a conductor is in a magnetic field and radiation propagates in the direction of the field, the complex dielectric constant may be usefully represented on an Argand diagram so that the variation with magnetic field of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant may be readily appreciated.
