摘要:
The detailed spectral energy distribution of the radiation emitted by stars provides information on their composition and physical parameters. Many of the astpophysically important spectral lines of neutral and ionized atoms whose study can lead to a better understanding of the processes occurring in stellar atmosphere and in the interstellar gas lie in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.

摘要:
The earth's atmosphere is a fluid that is capable of supporting wave motions whose amplitudes grow with height. This article reviews some of the evidence for the existence of these waves and outlines a simple theoretical approtioh for describing them. Finally, the article reviews the studies that have been made dealing with the interaction between the ionization and the atmospheric waves believed to exist at ionospheric heights—namely accoustic waves, evanescent waves and inter-nal atmospheric gravity waves.

摘要:
The Theory of Relativity requires that theie should be a gravitational analogue to electromagnetic radiation. It is impossible to generate measurable quantities in the laboratory but recent observations indicate that there may be a tremendous flux coming from the centre of our galaxy. Collisions between gravita-tionally collapsed objects (black holes) seem to be the only mechanism which could produce this amount of radiation.

摘要:
This survey reviews the experimental work on gravitational radiation from its prediction by Einstein as a part of his General Theory of Relativity. After a long programme of development of detectors, J. Weber claimed, some three years ago, to have detected intense bursts of gravitational radiation emanating from unknown sources beyond the solar system. At present there is no evidence from independent sources to confirm Weber's results, but his work has stimulated widespread activity among experimental and theoretical workers. Should Weber's results be confirmed, we have before us the prospect of a new form of astronomy.
