摘要:
The recent discovery of a metallic alloy that behaves like a crystal, but which is characterized by a ‘forbidden’ fivefold or icosahedral symmetry, has led to the redefinition of the crystalline state. These ‘quasi-crystals’ have since become the subject of intense study and debate. In this paper we describe the remarkable properties of quasicrystals and show how their structure can be described with the aid of concepts developed in other disciplines: the golden number, Penrose tiling, and the theory of irrational numbers.

Over the last 15 years there have been rapid advances in the technology associated with low-energy positron beams. The origins of these advances, and some of the major developments, are discussed. Some applications from the diverse fields of surface physics, atomic scattering and positronium studies are highlighted.

摘要:
‘Epitaxy’ means order in the relative orientation of identical crystals nucleated and grown on a large single-crystal face. Every crystal of the deposited material is oriented in such a way that there is coincidence of some vectors of its reciprocal lattice with vectors of the reciprocal lattice of the substrate surface. Depending on the length of the coincident vectors, one distinguishes between epitaxy of first order (coincidence of basis vectors), second order, and so on.

Ernst Mach (1838-1916) is chiefly famous on two counts: for his brilliant experimental work on shock waves (in recognition of which the Mach number is named after him) and for his numerous critical historical studies of the development of physics. It was through these studies that Mach became an extremely influential and controversial figure in the physics of the twentieth century. This explains why the present work, a translation into English of his Die Principien der Wärmelehre, which was first published in 1896, now appears as Volume 17 of the Vienna Circle Collection published by Reidel. (The Vienna Circle was a discussion group of philosophically interested scholars who met weekly from 1925 to 1936 at the University of Vienna. Mach was regarded as one of their precursors.)

This is a curious book, at first interesting, then irritating and finally infuriating. It is half an uncritical account of Sir Horace Darwin and the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, half a description of a dozen of the Company's most noteworthy products. The principal problem the book sets for a reviewer is to try to identify the audience for whom it was written.
