摘要:
Although the amplitude of the signal itself is an inverse function of distance, it is easier to discriminate between an underground explosion and an earthquake at a great distanre from the source than closer at hand. Two types of elastic waves are used–the longitudinalP-waves(detected by a seismometer of about 1 sec period) and the surface RayleighR-waves(detected by a 20 sec seismometer). An account is given of the principles of short-period array systems and their diagnostic performance, and of the independent diagnosis afforded by observations of theR-waves. The relevance of the experimental facilities and of the analytical results to more general geophysical and geological problems is briefly mentioned.

摘要:
A review is presented of previous papers on the apparent shape of bodies travelling with speeds comparable to that of light. It is shown that the visibility or otherwise of the Lorentz contraction depends on the method of observation adopted and on the shape of the body in question. Visual, photographic and radar-type methods are discussed, including the hitherto neglected application of stereoscopic perception. The theory is developed for a new possible technique of observation, that in which an object illuminates itself momentarily in its rest frame, the image being recorded as a time exposure by the observer.

摘要:
An account is given of the basic mechanism of adhesion in all welding processes, and a brief review of fusion and pressure welding techniques is given. A completely new method of welding which employs high explosives is briefly described and explained in terms of the principle used in the hollow charge, which wm developed during days of war to defeat heavy armour plate.
