Summary.Incubation of 2‐ammo‐3‐chloro‐l,4‐naphthoquinone (ACNQ), a potential herbicide for transplanted paddy rice (Qryza sativaL.), with rice seedlings led to rapid inactivation; in the absence of plants, the concentration was unaltered. The rate of disappearance increased with seedling age, and with number of seedlings per unit volume of solution. Only small proportions of the amounts disappearing could be extracted from the plants. Fresh homogenates of rice andEchinochloa crus‐galli(L.) Beauv. also caused inactivation, while heated homogenates had less effect. It is suggested that AGNQ is inactivated in the course of its herbicidal action and that if plants remain alive after complete inactivation, they can resume normal growth.Activity herbicide de la 2‐amitto‐3‐ckloro‐1,4‐napktoquinone. III.

Summary.Pyrazon (5‐amino‐4‐chloro‐2‐phenylpyridazin‐3(2H)‐one) and benzthiazuron (N‐(2‐benzothiazolyl)‐N′‐methylurea) were compared in respect to their effects on photosynthesis and growth of sugar beet, and to their movement in soil. Benzthiazuron had a five‐fold greater inhibitory effect than pyrazon on photosynthesis, and a ten‐fold greater inhibitory effect on the growth of sugar beet grown in treated culture solution. On the other hand, sugar beet was more tolerant to benzthiazuron than to pyrazon when grown in soil treated pre‐emergence with the herbicides.Leaching of pyrazon in clay soil appeared to be greater than that of benzthiazuron. Both herbicides entered the emerging seedlings through their roots, and hence movement of the compounds to the root zone by excess irrigation might be injurious to sugar beet. This was found to be more likely to occur with pyrazon than with benzthiazuron.Sélectivité du PCA et du benzthiazuron pour la betterave sucrièreRésumé.

Summary.Seeds ofPolygonum lapathifoliumandP. persicariawere germinated in mid‐March, ‐April or ‐May 1967 and mid‐April, ‐May, ‐June or ‐July 1968 and planted out into fertilized field plots. Seed was collected from twelve individual plants for each month of sowing. Mean seed weight was least from May‐sown plants in 1967 and from June‐sown plants in 1968 for both species. May‐sown plants of P. persicaria had the lowest percentage of trigonous seeds in both years. Viability and germination were influenced by month of sowing in both species. Month of sowing also affected inter‐plant variation in the various attributes studied. In the 1967 experiment. May‐sown P.lapathifoliumplants produced seed that germinated more slowly than that from March‐ or April‐sown plants; only a small percentage of the germinated seeds from the May sowing were able to emerge when shallowly planted in compost. Plant fresh weight was positively correlated with seed production and with seed weight, the correlation coefficients being larger for P.persicaria. Samen vonPolygonum lapathifoliumund P.persicariawurden 1967 Mitte März, Mitte April bzw.

Summary.Six sugarcane varieties, N: Co 310, F146, F148, F152, F153 and F156, were Found in a field trial to differ in their tolerance to pre‐emergence diuron with units of susceptibility of 100, 1·57, 1·20, 1·60, 11·30 and 8·07, and to pre‐emergence atrazine of 0·75, 0·97, 0·59, 1·44, 2·42 and 0·78 respectively. Relative tolerance was assessed by subjecting each variety to seven rates of the herbicides in geometric series and calculating the F values for monthly measurements of the cane plants through the growing seasons of both the autumn‐planting and ratoon crops. Units of susceptibility of each variety were obtained by transforming each mean F value into a proportion of the value for the standard variety N: Co 310. Any residual effect of the pre‐emergence herbicides even at 20 kg/ha a.i. on cane plants was found to be small and insignificant after ploughing field ridges 5 months from cane‐planting. With diuron, increasing the rate up to 10 kg/ha began to cause a significant reduction of sugar yield per hectare of cane, while atrazine gave such a reduction only with 20 kg/ha.Détermination de la résistance variétale de la canne à sucre à l'éigard du diuron et de l'atrazine appliqués en pré‐levéeRésumé.

Summary. The inhibition of photosynthesis of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) by root‐applied herbicides was determined at different rates of transpiration, obtained by varying air humidity, light intensity and temperature. The plants were treated with 5×10−6M of simazine, simeton, lenacil, isocil, diuron and fenuron in the nutrient solution. CO2uptake and transpiration of intact bean plants were measured continuously. The decrease in photosynthesis was more rapid at higher transpiration rates. For each herbicide the total transpiration to the 50% inhibition level of photosynthesis was almost constant at different rates of transpiration, indicating that the degree of inhibition is determined by the transpiration stream in the plants. Treatments with lenacil and diuron resulted in a lower degree of photosynthesis inhibition than did the other herbicides. The results are discussed in relation to uptake studies, herbicidal effects and adsorption phenomena of these and similar herbicides. They are also related to the field performance of such herbicides.

Summary.Seeds ofPoa trivialisL. were sown monthly on bare ground in South‐East England during 1967–68 and the germination and development patterns recorded. The seeds germinated under a wide range of atmospheric temperature and soil moisture conditions. In winter, however, germination was slower to begin and more prolonged than during the summer. Seedlings germinating before the winter produced more and earlier seed heads the following spring than those germinating during the winter and spring. It is suggested that spring‐sown cereal crops, and delayed stubble cultivations of old infested grass seed crops, should be investigated as measures to controlPoa trivialis.

Summary.A perfusion technique was used to examine effects of selected herbicides (concentration range 50–1000 ppm) on the rate of oxidation of ammonia to nitrate in garden loam soil. Effects on the nitrification rate of soil, previously enriched with nitrifying organisms, were used to estimate direct action on the processes of ammonia oxidation. The kinetics of nitrification in fresh soil were used to estimate effects on bacterial growth and to detect possible adaptations to herbicide toxicity. The herbicides used could be ranged in the following order of increasing effectiveness as inhibitors of ammonia oxidation: dichlobenil

Summary. The adsorption capacity for paraquat of the following materials was examined: three peat soils; two peaty layers below a turf; a commercial sphagnum peat; grass; Begbroke soil; Fullers’ earth; humic acids isolated from a peat soil; lignin isolated from hardwood sawdust; cellulose powder. The Strong Adsorption Capacity (SAC) of these adsorbents was examined first using a chemical method of analysis and then with the more sensitiveLemnabioassay. Peat soils had an appreciable SAC for paraquat even when measured with the bioassay (88–165 kg/ha 2–5 cm depth, 750–1000 ppm),>10 times that of Begbroke soil (14 kg/ha, 50 ppm). Humic acids had a higher adsorption capacity (k = 42, 000) than lignin (k = 2600), while cellulose adsorbed very little paraquat (k = 64).The adsorption of paraquat decreased as the ratio of soil to water increased. Temperature appeared to have very small effects on adsorption in organic soils. Results were consistent with calcium competing for adsorption sites.Paraquat sprayed on the surface of a peat soil up to 36 kg/ha remained in the top 7 mm after leaching with 305 mm of natural rainfall over a period of 4 months. Paraquat adsorbed on commercial sphagnum peat could transfer to clays after incorporation and be inactivated.
