Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungChromolaena odorata(L.) K.&R.(= Eupatorium odoratumL.) has invaded large areas of the coastal belt of Natal province in South Africa. Propagation is predominantly by means of windborne achenes. The germination of these achenes was investigated. Of the temperatures tested, alternating 15/30°C was optimal for germination. These achenes are positively photoblastic and an imbibition period prior to exposure was required to sensitize the achenes to light. The promotive effect of red light on the germination of imbibed achenes could be reversed by subsequent exposure to far‐red light while the inhibitory effect of far‐red light could be nullified by a subsequent red light treatment. This is typical of a phytochromemediated germination response.Germination d'akènes deChromolaena odorata(L.) K.&R.: effets de la température, de l'imbibition el de la lumièreChromolaena odorata(L.) Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungResidues of fluazifop‐butyl were determined in strawberries from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada and North Carolina, U.S.A. using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system. Strawberries harvested within 28 days of treatment (pre‐harvest interval= PHI) had detectable residues of fluazifop, ranging from 0.05 ppmw with a split application of 0.25 kg ha‐1and a 18‐day PHI to 3.24 ppmw with a split application of 0.5 kg ha−1and a 12‐day PHI. Fluazifop was not detected in samples treated 287 days or more before harvest (prior growing season) at 0.25–1.65 kg ha−1(three applications of 0.55 kg ha−1). Fluazifop‐butyl did not provide acceptable control (50% with two applications of 0.25 kg ha−1) ofElymus repens(L.) Gould in a commercial planting in New Brunswick. Control ofDigitaria sanguinalis(L.) Scop. was better than 90% with two applications of 0.30 kg ha−1in North Carolina. Résumé: Summary: ZusammenfassungLes semences deLeersia oryzoides(L.) Sw. germent mal au moment de leur récolte parce qu'elles sont dormantes. Leur germination exige des températures élevées, mais une alternance de températures fraîches et de températures élevées est plus favorable. La dormanee résulte en partie de l'action inhibitrice des glumellcs qui sont capables de fixer de l'oxygène, ce qui réduit la quantité de ce gaz disponible pour le grain. Elle s'élimine très lentement au cours de la conservation au sec ou pendant un prétraitement au froid humide. A 20°C, les caryopses nus germent mieux en hypoxie (3 à 15% d'02) qu'à l'air et un excès d'oxygène est très nocif. A 30°C, par contre, leur germination reste possible dans des atmosphères enrichies en ce gaz (50 à 100%d'02). Les caractéristiques physiologiques de la dormance et de la germination de ces semences sont discutées en relation avec l'adaptation de la mauvaise herbe à son environnement.Some aspects of the germination of caryopses ofLeersia oryzoides(L.) Germination requires high températures but is improved at a diurnal alternation between high and low temperature. Dormancy is partially due to inhibition by the glumes which are capable of oxygen uptake and thus reduce the amount of oxygen available to the grain. This dormancy is gradually reduced during dry storage, or low temperature incubation. Germination of naked caryopses at 20°C is higher at sub‐aimospheric 02(3–15%) than in normal air, while excess oxygen is noxious. At 30°C, however, germination takes place even in 02‐enriched atmospheres (50–100%), The physiological characteristics of dormancy and of germination of this species are discussed in relation to the adaptation of this weed to its environment.Uber die Keimung der Karyopsen vonLeersia oryzoides(L.) Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungThe interaction of ioxynil and mecoprop applied toStellaria media(L.) Vill. was investigated under controlled environmental conditions and several statistical methods were used to test for positive or negative interactions employing a multiplicative survival model. Information on the contribution of each herbicide to the total effect was gained by recording numbers of shoots and leaves, internode length and photosynthetic carbon dioxide exchange. Results showed that ioxynil and mecoprop can interact strongly, but the degree and direction of this interaction varied according to both the growth stage of the plants at spraying and the length of time between spraying and assessment of response. In general a synergistic interaction occurred where plants were younger at spraying and with a longer period of time between spraying and assessment of effects. These results are discussed in relation to the potential for using reduced doses of this herbicide mixture, and the importance of the design and interpretation of interaction studies are considered.Action réciproque de l'ioxynil et du MCPP appliqués surStellaria media(L.) An einem multiplikativen Ueberlebensmodell wurden verschiedene statistische Methoden eingesetzt, um positive oder negative Wechselwirkungen aufzudecken. Zur Erarbeitung der notwendigen Information über den Beitrag jedes Herbizids zur Gesamtwirkung wurden folgende Parameter bestimmt: Anzahl Sprosse und Blätter, Länge der Internodien und der photosynthetische CO2‐Austausch. Die Resultate zeigten, dass Ioxynil und Mecoprop stark zusammenwirken können, wobei aber Grad und Qualität der Wechselwirkung (positiv oder negativ) je nach Alter der Pflanzen bei der Behandlung und Intervall zwischen Behandlung und Messung der Reaktion variierten. Der Trend zu Synergismus war umso ausgeprägter, je jünger die Pflanzen bei der Behandlung und je länger die Intervalle zwischen letzterer und den Messungen waren. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungTrials were conducted at the research farm of the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, on acid sandy loam soil at a tropical rainforest site during 1982 and 1983. A range of pre‐emergence herbicides were evaluated in a system of yam production using small (25 g) tuber pieces, ‘minisetts’, for multiplication up to ‘seed’ yam size with tubers of 100–1500 g wt. In the 2 years considered, uncontrolled weed growth resulted in an average tuber yield loss of 83% compared to the hand‐weeded treatment yield of 3.6 t ha−1. Pre‐emergence application of fluometuron, chloramben, diuron/paraquat, simazine and atrazine/metolachlor at the rates of 1.4, 2.7, 1.6, 5.7 and 3.8 kg ai ha−1respectively effectively controlled weeds and gave tuber yields that compared favourably with the current recommended practice of three hand‐weedings 3, 8 and 12 weeks after planting. These five herbicides were most promising when they were applied tank‐mixed with paraquat at 0.5 kg ai ha−13 weeks after planting, post‐emergence to the weeds and at approximately 5% emergence of the yam.Des herbicides pour la production d'ignames ‘minisetts’ dans la zone forestière humide du NigériaDes essais ont été mis en place en 1982 et 1983 à la ferme du National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, sur un sol franc sablonneux acidique de la zone forestière humide. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungThe effects of growing young plants ofPteridium aquilinum(L.) Kuhn (bracken) in shaded and unshaded conditions and with differential applications of nitrogen, phosphate and balanced fertilizer are described. The results are discussed in relation to possible effects on correlative inhibition. Single applications of N and P have little effect, but addition of both together or of NPK fertilizer produces increased frond production and rhizome growth. Shaded plants produce fewer fronds and these are of greater surface area, but thinner than those of unshaded plants. It is suggested that increased frond production resulting from enhanced nitrogen supply and exposure to full light may make bracken more susceptible to herbicide applications.Etudes sur la croissance dePteridium aquilinum(L.) Summary: Résumé: ZussammenfassungIn oil palm seedlings grown in polybags, delaying the initial hand‐weeding of both the polybags and the intervening ground by up to 16 weeks after sowing and subsequently weeding at intervals of 2–6 weeks, had no adverse effects on seedling growth. A delay of initial weeding for 20 weeks after sowing and weeding intervals of 8 weeks retarded seedling growth, particularly number of leaves/plant, plant height and girth, leaf area index and seedling dry weight.Initial weeding delayed beyond 4 weeks after sowing and weeding intervals longer than 2 weeks progressively increased both weed growth and the number of oil palm seedlings affected by blast caused byRhizoctonia lamelliferaSmall andPythium splendensBraun. The seedling population at the end of the experiment was, however, similar in all the weeding treatments.Plant height was the only parameter of seedling growth significantly influenced by different combinations of weeding the polybags and the intervening ground separately at intervals of 4, 8 and 12 weeks respectively, starting after sowing. Cette croissance a été réduite quand le premier sarclage a été retardé jusqu'à 20 semaines après le semis et que les sarclages ultérieures ont eu lieu à des intervalles de 8 semaines. La réduction s'est fait voir surtout dans le nombre de feuilles par plante, la hauteur et la circonférence des plantes, l'index ce la surface foliaire et le poids sec des plants.Lorsque le premier sarclage a été retardé jusqu'à plus de 4 semaines après le semis et que les sarclages se sont faits à intervalles de plus de 15 jours, l'enherbement est devenu progressivement plus fort ainsi que le nombre de jeunes palmiers touchés par la brûlure provoquée parRhizoctonia lamelliferaSmall etPythium salendensBraun. Néanmoins la population déjeunes plants à la fin de l'expérience était semblable pour tous les systèmes de sarclage.Seule la hauteur des jeunes plants a témoigné d'une influence significative lorsque les polysacs et le sol avoisinant ont été désherbé indépendamment l'un de l'autre à intervalles de 4, 8 et 12 semaines respectivement, à partir du semis. A base de ces résultats, on conseille 4–6 sarclages pendant 12 mois à partir du semis, au lieu des sarclages mensuels pratiqués actuellement dans les pépinières de palmier à l'huile.Ueber die Wirkung von Anzahl und Zeitpunkt der Handjätungen in Oelpalmen‐Baumschulen(Elaeis guineensisJacq.)In dieser Studie wird untersucht, welchen Einfluss der Zeitpunkt der ersten Handjätung und die Intervalle zwischen den folgenden manuellen Unkrautentfernungen auf die Entwicklung der in Kunststoffbehältern kultivierten Sämlinge der Oelpalme ausüben. Es wurde kein negativer Einfluss auf des Wachstum der Sämlinge beobachtet, wenn die erste Handjätung bis zu 16 Wochen nach der Aussaat verzögert worden war und die späteren Jätungen in Intervallen von 2–6 Wochen ausgeführt wurden. Hingegen hatten ein Hinausschieben der ersten Entunkrautung auf 20 Wochen nach der Aussaat und Intervalle von 8 Wochen zwischen den weiteren Jätungen eine negative Auswirkung auf die Entwicklung der Sämlinge, insbesondere auf die Anzahl Blätter pro Pfianze, Pflanzenhähe und Stammumfang, Blattflächenindex und Trockengewicht der Sämlinge.Erfolgte die erste Unkrautentfernung später als 4 Wochen nach der Saat und wurden die Intervalle zwischen den späteren Jätungen auf mehr als 2 Wochen ausgedehnt, nahmen in steigendem Masse die Unkrautentwicklung und die Anzahl der durchRhizoctonia lamelliferaSmall undPythium splendensBraun. befallenen Oelpalmensämlinge zu. Summary; Résumé; ZusammenfassungUnrestricted weed growth reduced the yield of transplanted onions (Allium cepaL.) by 26–48%. Hand‐weeding once, 42 days after transplanting reduced the yield loss to 15%. Application of oxadiazon (1.1–1.3 kg ai ha−1), pendimethalin (1.2–1.8 kg ai ha−1), oxyfluorfen (0.14–0.43 kg ai ha−1) and chlorthal‐dimethyl (8.3–13.1 kg ai ha−1) resulted in yields comparable to the hand‐weeded control (82–126%). When sprayed at transplanting these herbicides gave excellent and persistent control of grasses (86–100%). Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungIn this series of glasshouse experiments, several factors influencing the foliar activity of fluazifop‐butyl, butyl‐2‐[4‐(5‐trifluoromethyl‐2‐pyridylox‐y)phenoxy] propionate, againstElymus repens(L.) Gould (=Agropyron repens(L.) Beauv.) were investigated. The growth stage of the weed even up to about 16 weeks of age was not found to be a major factor affecting the performance, if a dose of 1.0 kg ai ha−1is used. The activity of fluazifop‐butyl was affected by low temperature, low humidity and water stress, all of which reduced the herbicide performance to varying extents. High post‐treatment temperature or humidity favoured the activity of the herbicide, as measured from the regrowth ability of treated plants. Moderate water stress did not affect the activity significantly, but severe stress led to the plants becoming more tolerant of the herbicide. The effect of light/shade on foliar activity was not clear, bin showed a tendency of decreasing with increasing shade. Adverse effects of rain, probably due to wash‐off of the retained spray droplets, reduced the performance of fluazifop‐butyl, if rain fell within 6 h of spraying.Certains facteurs qui touchent à la performance du fluazifop‐butyle contreElymus repens (L.)Gould.(= Agropyron repens (L.) Il en résulte que, même jusqu'à l'âge de 16 semaines, le stade végétal de l'adventice ne paraît pas jouer un rôle important dans la performance de l'herbicide à une dose de 1,0 kg ma ha−1. L'activité du fluazifop‐butyle se trouve altérée en conséquence de température faibles, d'une faible humidité et de carence d'eau; tous ces facteurs ont amené une réduction plus ou moins grande dans la performance de l'herbicide. A en juger part la croissance nouvelle des plantes traitées, une température élevée, de même qu'une forte humidité suivant l'application, favorisent l'activité herbicide. La carence d'eau n'a exercé une influence significative sur l'activité herbicide que lorsqu'elle est devenue sévère; alors les plantes ont fait preuve d'une moindre tolérance. L'influence de la lumière sur l'activité foliaire est restée imprécise mais celle‐ci a eu tendance à dimineur à mesure qu'augmentait l'ombre. Das Entwicklungsstadium des Unkrauts war auch bei bis zu 16 Wochen alten Pflanzen ohne Einfluss auf die Wirkung, solange 1,0 kgAS ha−1angewandt wurden. Niedrige Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit sowie Wassermangel setzen die Wirkung des Herbizids, die am Wiederaustrieb gemessen wurde, herab.
