Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungIn three experiments, glyphosate (1.0 kg/ha) and aminotriazole (1.5 kg/ha) killed volunteer potatoes. Glyphosate (0.5 kg/ha) gave acceptable control in the field but not in the two pot experiments; in these latter, addition of ammonium sulphate to glyphosate improved its performance. Field applications of both herbicides at the end of May were less effective than those in June and July, because not all the sprouts had emerged in May. Aminotriazole killed those daughter tubers already pre sent, whilst glyphosate affected sprout viability and hence their ability to produce new plants. The practical potential of these two herbicides for the control of volunteer potatoes is discussed.Activité du glyphosate el de l'aminotriazole contre les repousses de pommes de terre et leurs tubercules filsDans trois expériences, le glyphosate (1,0 kg/ha) et l'aminotria‐zole (1,5 kg/ha) ont tue les repousses de pommes de terre. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungIn glasshouse experiments 1,8‐naphthalic anhydride (NA) as a seed dressing, and N,N‐diallyl‐2,2‐dichloroacetamide (R25788), either as a seed dressing or mixed in the spray tank with the herbicide, protected maize(Zea maysL.) from subsequent barban damage. When applied after maize emergence, R25788 was not effective through the foliage but had to reach the soil to provide protection. Soil drench treatments of R25788 countered barban damage successfully if applied up to 7 days prior to spraying or up to one day after. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungGlasshouse and field studies made in Australia to investigate flowering and seed production ofEchium plantagineumL, are described.Stem elongation and flowering were hastened by long photo‐periods and by tow temperatures. This provides some explanation as to why the species is more common in higher latitudes, where temperatures are low in winter and phoioperiods are long in summer.The plant producedc.6000 gcrminable seeds m−2in a grazed pasture andc. 10 000 germinable seeds m−2in a nearby ungrazed area. Such productions would be more than adequate to permit persistence and potential dominance. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungGermination of seed ofIpomoea obscuraHassk. (small white morning glory) was enhanced when seed coats were pricked with a needle or scarified by cone H2SO4. When seed were incubated in moist paper towels, they germinated best following 75 min exposure to acid. Seed planted in a potting mixture of sandy clay loam, ground sphagnum moss, and sand germinated best after 90 min in acid.I. obscuraseed germination was highest at 15°C, but germination at temperatures up to 35°C was not significantly lower after 144 h incubation.Influence de la température et de la durée de la scarification acide sur la germination des semences d'Ipomoea obscuraHassk.La germination des semencesd'Ipomoea obscuraHassk. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungField and glasshouse experiments were conducted to study the effect of three levels of soil compaction on the activity of two soil‐applied herbicides, atrazine and trifluralin, using oats as test species. The moderate and heavy compactions increased the bulk density by 24.7 and 35.1% respectively while the normal compaction had negligible effect on physical properties of the soil compared to the freshly cultivated ground. Initial phytotoxicity of both herbicide's was increased significantly by the heavy compaction treatment. Moderate soil compaction also enhanced the initial activity of atrazine but trifluralin activity remained unaffected from this treatment. Trifluralin was more persistent than atrazine and the residual activity of both herbicides was increased significantly as a result of both the moderate and heavy compaction treatments.Effet du compactage du sol sur la phytoloxicilé et la persistance des herbicides appliques sur le solDes expériences au champ et en serre ont été effectuées pour etudier l'effet de trois degrés de compactage du sol sur l'activité de deux herbicides appliqués sur le sol, l'atrazine et la trifluraline, en utilisant l'avoine comme plante test. Als Testpflanze wurde Hafer verwendet. Durch eine mittlere und starke Ver‐dichtung nahm das Boden‐Volumengewicht um 24,7% bzw. um 35,1% zu. Eine normale Verdichtung hatte, verglichen mil einem frisch bearbeiteten Boden, nur eine geringe Wirkung auf die physikalischen Bodeneigenschaften. Durch die starke Verdichtung nahm die phytotoxische Wirkung beider Herbizide significant zu. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungDegradation studies of nitralin [4‐(methylsulfonyl)‐2.6‐dinitro‐N.N‐dipropylaniline] were performed with pure cultures ofRhizactoma solaniKühn. Czapek Dos Broth was selected as the growth medium and contained no components which interfered with extraction and subsequent TLC analysis. Ten to I I degradation products were detected after 14 to 21 days incubation at 33°C, The nonpolar fraction (ethyl acetate exlraclahkl contained at least nine compounds visible on TLC plales. Only one product other than the parent nitralin was identified the monoalkylated derivate. 4‐(meihylsulfonyl)‐2.6‐dinitro‐N‐pro‐pylanilinc. After 21 days approximately 10% of the original nitralin could be detected. The aqueous phase (after ethyl ace‐late extraction) was concentrated, placed on a Sephadex G10 column and separated into at leasi two products. Bacteria. actinomycetes, yeasts, fungi and algae can be used as test organisms. A modification of the method allows determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations of pesticides to specific microorganisms. Summary: Résumé: ZusammenfassungSeveral degradation products of the iriazine herbicides atrazine [2‐chloro‐4‐ethylamino‐6‐isapropylainino‐1,3,5‐triazine], cyprazine [2‐chloro‐4‐cyclopropylamino‐6‐isopropylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine]and cyanazine [2‐chloro‐4‐(l‐cyanomethylethyl‐amimo)‐6‐ethylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine] were monitored over a 3‐year period in soil Trom fields under maiTC production. The soils were predominately loamy sands and sandy clay loams. HydroKy‐triazines were determined semi‐quanlilatively m the soil samples by gaschromalography, after methylation. Their levels ranged Trom 0.05 to 0.5 ppm. The hydroxy‐triazines were the predominant triazine residues in the field during ihe spring and autumn,N‐de‐ethylated atrazine [2‐chloro‐4‐amino‐6‐iso‐propylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine] persisted at relatively high levels (0.015–0.02 ppm) 12 months after the application of atrazine. Greater proportions ofN‐de‐ethylated atrazine and cyanazineII[2‐chloro‐4‐(1‐carbamoyl‐1‐methyleihylamino)‐6‐ethyl‐amino‐s‐iriazine] than of atrazine or cyanazine were found to move through the soil profile into subsurface drainage water (1.2–1.6 m depth).Abbau und Transport von drei Triazin‐Herbiziden und einiger ihrer Abbauproduk te im Boden unter FeldhedingungenBoden von Maisfeldern wurde über eine Periode von drei Jahren auf Abbauprodukte folgender Triazin‐Herbizide unter‐suchi: Atrazin [2‐Chlor‐4‐äthylamino‐6‐isopropylatnino‐1,3,5‐triazin], Cyprazin [2‐Chlor‐4‐cyclopropylamino‐6‐isopropyla‐mino‐1,3,5‐(triazin) und Cyanazin [2‐Chlor‐4‐(1‐cyanoinethy‐läthylamino)‐6‐äthylamino‐1,3,5‐triazin], Bei den Böden han‐delie es sich hauptsächlich um lehmige Sande und sandig‐tonige Lehme Hydroxy‐Triazine wurden in den Bodenproben gas‐chromatogruphish nach Methylierung. semi‐quantitativ be‐stimmt. Ihre Konzeniration im Boden betrug zwischen 0.05 und 0.5 ppm. Die Hydroxy‐Triazine waren im Frähjahr und Herbst die vorherrschenden Rücksiände, N‐desäthylieries Airazin [2‐Chlor‐4‐amino‐6‐isopropyIamino‐1,1,5‐triazin] war zwölf Monate nach der Atrazin‐Applikation mit relative hohen Kon‐zenirationen(0.015–0.02 ppm) vorhanden.
