A previously studied site at Hangassuo in the commune of Anjalankoski, formerly Sippola, in south‐eastern Finland has been re‐examined. The basal layers of the profile contain a clay‐gyttja horzon deposited on peat, indicative of the Ancylus Lake transgression. A date of approx. 9500 B.P. was obtained for the lower peat layer, deposited after isolation of the basin during the Yoldia phase, and a date of 9280 ± 190 B.P. for the lower part of the transgression horizon. The upper part gave a date of 8870 ± 170 B.P. These dates suggest that the beginning of the Ancylus Lake phase and the Ancylus transgression occurred considerably earlier than has previously been suggested in the Late Quaternary chronology for Finland. The appearance ofAlnusin the area is also dated. The pollen curve begins at 8360 ± 190 B.P. and the major increase of the species occurs at 7810 ± 180 B.P.The events in the history of the Ancylus Lake and problems connected with these are

The Clyde Foreland Formation is defined as comprising unconsolidated or only slightly consolidated deposits, varying in grain size from very coarse boulder gravel to clay, situated between the outermost part of Clyde Inlet and the coastal mountains west‐northwest of Kogalu River on the northeast coast of Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. They outcrop in an up to 40 m high almost straight‐lined coastal cliff facing Baffin Bay and are composed of mainly marine deposits interbedded with glacigenic layers.Investigation of assemblages of fossil foraminifera revealed three main stratigraphical units of the marine deposits, viz., thehlandiellazone, being the youngest, theCibicides rotundatuszone, and theNonion tallahattensiszone, being the oldest.Thehlandiellazone is supposed to be upper Pleistocene of age, comprising a large Mid‐Wisconsinian (Mid‐Weichselian) interstadial, and an interglacial that can be correlated with the Sangamonian (Eemian) interglacial. TheCibicides rotundatuszone may comprise Illinoian interstadial deposits as well as deposits of Yarmouthian (Holsteinian) interglacial age. The geomorphology of the river terraces in the lower Vistula River valley of North PÖland is briefly described. They were earlier regarded as Late Wiirmian (terraces IX‐IV) and Holocene (terraces III–I). Litho‐ and biostratigraphical studies of terrace depressions together with radiocarbon datings of their bottom layers indicate that even terrace II was formed during the Allerød Chronozone (11,800 to 11,000 B.P.) or earlier. In addition, radiocarbon datings have shown that the surface sediments of the flood plain were deposited in middle Holocene. These datings are of importance to the chronology of other large river valleys in the southern Baltic region. Results from detailed pollen and18O/16O studies on two sediment profiles from small Swiss lakes are reported.18O/16O records in lacustrine carbonate contain paleoclimatic information because they reflect mainly the isotope ratio in rain and snow which is correlated to temperature. Several transitions between different climatic periods determined palyno‐logically are also indicated by marked changes in the isotope ratios in both profiles, namely the transitions Oldest Dryas ‐ Bøiling and Allerød ‐ Younger Dryas ‐ Preboreal.18o/16O was 2 to 3 %0 lower during Younger Dryas than during the adjacent periods, corresponding to a temperature drop of a few degrees Centigrade according to a tentative
