摘要:
Staff retention and improved job satisfaction are said to be associated with adequate orientation. Burn units typically have retention problems and burn nurses are usually in short supply. A study was done to determine the ways in which new nurses are oriented to burn care in burn units. Eighty-two units in the continental United States participated in the study by answering a 21-item questionnaire giving information about the input, process, and output phases of their orientation programs. Since nurses are adults, results were looked at partly in terms of their consistency with the principles of adult learning. Planning and evaluation were found to be least congruent with adult learning theories. Head nurses, the study showed, are most heavily involved in all aspects of orientation, but physicians and other disciplines are often represented as well.

摘要:
An incentive awards program for the retention of burn nurses is described. The program recognizes staff nurse achievements using a point accumulation system and rewards the burn nurse with an expense-paid trip to a burn/critical care continuing education meeting. The article discusses program planning, implementation, and outcomes.
