摘要:
ABSTRACTBrackish‐water oil field pipeline canals located in coastal Louisiana were rotenoned so that mariculture studies could be conducted. Standing crops within the canals ranged from 133 to 369 kg per ha, with an average minimum wholesale value of $38.80 per ha. Centrarchids and channel catfish were found in lower salinity canals (5.5 to 8.5 ppt), but not in a higher salinity canal (25 ppt). Sea catfish, oyster toadfish, and gray snapper were found only in the latter. The canals contained from 15 to 28 different fish species, with clupeids, sparids, and sciaenids predominating. Standing crops within pipeline canals are apparently higher than in surrounding areas, but potential brood stock may never reproduce because they are trapped within the canal

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis research was conducted July, 1969 through February, 1970 at the P. H. Robinson Generating Station on Galveston Bay, Texas and deals with the potential of using heated water from an electric generating station for a soft shell, blue crab (Callinectessapidus) industry. In cost per kg the soft shell crab is one of the more valuable resources being fished along the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico. The lack of competition from a wild winter stock of soft shell blue crabs would add value to a winter fisheries. The presence of a large wild stock of hard shell blue crabs throughout the year could provide the industry with an inexpensive stocking source.Molting in the intake and discharge canals occured at temperatures between 15 and 35C; the majority of molting crabs were taken in the intake from July to the middle of October and from the discharge from the middle of October through February. Ten percent of the crabs taken after the initial drop below 15 C in the intake canal were soft while 24% of the crabs taken in the discharge canal during the same period of time were soft. The use of the intake canal waters during the warmest months, when discharge temperatures are too high for holding crabs, could make this a year round industry. Holding tanks for maintaining hard and peeler crabs could be moved from one canal to the other as water temperatures demanded.

摘要:
ABSTRACTSeveral species of marine fishes were cultured in cages in the intake and discharge canals of the P. H. Robinson Generating Station on Galveston Bay, Texas. Survival in the intake canal cages of Atlantic croaker (Micropogonundulatus), pinfish (Lagodonrhomboides), Florida pompano (Trachinotuscarolinus), white mullet (Mugilcurema), spot (Leiostomusxanthurus), and black drum (Pogoniascromis) was on the average 70% or greater, while that of pigfish (Orthopristischrysoptera), Gulf kingfish (Menticirrhuslittoralis), and silver perch (Bairdiellachrysura) was less than 70%. With the exception of pinfish, survival of caged fish in the discharge canal was extremely poor. Gas‐bubble disease was the probable cause of their mortality. Only croaker and pompano adapted to surface feeding in cages. Croaker, pinfish, and pompano cultured in cages were rated acceptable by a 12‐member taste panel. Mean taste evaluation scores for croaker, pinfish, and pompano for the appearance, flavor, and overall satisfaction categories were not significantly different (P=0.01). After about 1 year in the water, most cages used in the intake canal were in goad condition, but those located in the discharge canal were in poor condit

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe production of salmonids has been a continuing goal of the University of Rhode Island, Marine Experiment Station since 1968. Unfavorable climatic and hydrological conditions necessitated the adoption of cultural systems capable of sustained production. All phases of production from incubation to grow out have been carried out in a controlled environment water re‐use system. Problems encountered in the development and operation of these systems are discussed. Data developed to date indicate that water re‐use systems are technically feasible for all phases of production and dependence upon large volumes of high quality natural water are greatly reduced. Preliminary studies also indicate that marine environments suitable for salmonid culture can be created and maintained at locations remote from the co

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Alabama Marine Resources Division has been engaged in culturing pompano (TrachinotuscarolinusLin.) in suspended cages since 1969. Tests in 1972 demonstrated that Purina Trout Chow (a complete floating ration) was superior to a complete sinking ration for pompano in gain produced, food conversion and percent survival. Stocking densities of 263, 394, 526 to 657 pompano/m3cage volume demonstrated that individual growth was best at the lower stocking densities but that total weight gained/cage was best at the higher stocking densities. A maximum standing crop of 49.5 kg of pompano/m3cage volume was attained during the 103‐day culture perio

摘要:
ABSTRACTOne hundred young redfish (Sciaenopsocellata) were caught by hook and line fishing and stocked in two 0.1 ha ponds. The ponds, located near Baytown, Texas on the Galveston Bay complex, received heated discharge water from the Cedar Bayou Generating Station of the Houston Lighting and Power Company. Once established in the ponds, the fish were taught to eat Purina trout chow pellets. The ponds were drained periodically and redfish were counted, weighed, and measured. Eighty‐three fish were alive at the end of the study. Mean daily weight and length gain in the two ponds were 3.15 g and 2.69 g and 0.76 mm and 0.85 mm, respectively. Food conversion values ranged from 2.70 to 6.61. Mean KSLvalues ranged from 1.67 to 1.9

摘要:
ABSTRACTAtlantic croaker (Micropogonundulatus) were collected by hook and line in the Lower Laguna Madre at Port Isabel, Texas. The fish were transported to the Olmito State Fish Hatchery at Brownsville, Texas in a 3,780 liter transport tank.At the hatchery each fish was weighed, cathetered for egg sample, and placed in a 3,780 liter plastic swimming pool. Female croaker were injected with 300 I.U. of chorionic gonadotrophin per 454 g of body weight. The hormone caused the croaker to gain 50 g of water weight, and eggs matured in 33 hours after injection at 22 to 25 C. At this time, eggs were stripped into a small bowl, and milt was added and spread with a feather. Saltwater was added to activate sperm and diatomaceous earth was used to coat eggs to prevent clumping.Fertilized eggs were placed in various incubating systems to determine the best system for croaker and related species. Hatching began at 20 hours after the eggs were placed in incubators when the temperature was held at 20 to 25 C. At hatching the larvae were approximately 1.5 mm in length, transparent, eyes unpigmented, and digestive system and mouth lacking.

摘要:
ABSTRACTIt is possible to raise the spiny lobster (Panulirusargus) in captivity from the late pueruli stage to cmercial size (790 to 900 g) in approximately 3 to 4 years. The pueruli collected in inshore waters usually undergo two moltings and metamorphose into postlarvae. The postlarvae, young, and juvenile lobster collected from shallow waters readily feed on molluskan flesh. The Caribbean beach clam (Donaxdenticulatus) is ideal food for the lobster. The mortality of the lobsters can be kept at a minimum level if they are kept separated in individual compartments or cages. It is doubtful that the commercial culture of the lobster can be undertaken at this time; maintaining a large number of lobsters in captivity requires a large space and manpower, and the time required for the lobster to reach marketable size is exceedingly long. The cost of the operation is prohibitive at the current price structure.

摘要:
ABSTRACTGrowth rates forHomarusamericanushave been measured and interrelated in a comprehensive manner to include the required feeding rate, and food conversion efficiency. Feeding rate is a function only of age, and is given by: F = 300 C /θ where F is feeding rate in weight percent per day, θ is age in days, and C is grams of food per gram of growth. This equation also applies to other animals provided only that their length is proportional to age, and that weight varies as the cube of length. The equations are used to predict the size distribution of the ocean population, and are consistent with local field data. It takes about 6 years to reach legal size corresponding to about 454 g, but laboratory data project to only 2 years required if the lobsters are kept continuously in warm water.Factors causing mortality in the laboratory are discussed. Finally, illustrative economics for raising lobsters commercially from eggs are given and show a cost of $2.00 to $2.50 per 454 g which is about the current retail pric
