AbstractIn today's consumer society little attention is paid to extending the life of a product, even though this would reduce the depletion of resources, the waste volume and environmental degradation.The self-replenishing system creates spiral-loops that minimizes matter and energy flow, and environmental deterioration without restricting economic growth or social and technical progress.The hidden resources of goods and raw materials need to be seen and their potential recognized: then the new notions of value accompanying them can be accepted.

This is the type of innovation which is needed for the productlife optimization of goods and raw materials.Technology could provide mobile units for the repair and reconditioning of static systems and workshops for those that are movable.Most of the activities in the area of product-life optimization are sull in the nature of a craft and there are few links between those working in the field. These activities should become of fundamental importance and be treated equally with manufacturing activities.

AbstractThe modern service economy relies not just on the manufacture of products but on their correct functioning. This measuring of how systems work means that qualitative and non-monetarized considerations are becoming more important.The notion of risk and the management of vulnerability and uncertainty become key issues in the service economy. Consideration has now to be given to both risks which those involved can influence and also those over which there is no control.It is essential to adapt to the new service economy and see the opportunities for real economic and social growth.

AbstractUseful work would be a much better notion in economic analysis than employment; economic growth (of GNP) as an indication is even more problematic. More useful in assessing economic welfare would be a capital side to the national accounts, separation of costs from benefits, and a translation of aspects of welfare into concrete social objectives. Also needed is a clarification of the non-monetary economy.

AbstractA basic income scheme would aim to create a cohesive and socially just society and a far more equal basis for citizenship which would enable our present divisive structure to be dismantled. Whilst not being a panacea it is a good deal more than a technical solution to our present tax-benefit muddle.
