AbstractSusannah and Catherine were born and raised in China to an American mother and Chinese father. For the past year they have been living, working and studying in the United States. During the Cultural Revolution they joined the millions of young people who quit school to work in the fields and factories. Both worked as ‘barefoot doctors’.In Ottawa recently they talked to the annual meeting of CUSO (Canadian University Service Overseas).

AbstractScientific research in China is focussed on pragmatic solutions and, although theory is not entirely ignored, practical applications have a much higher priority in many fields. The emphasis is on science serving the people and the broad mass of people are encouraged to help in the collection of data needed to solve some of the large-scale scientific problems.

AbstractAlthough the number of physicians per 10 000 population in 1970 was 7.9 for the world as a whole, it was only 1.36 for Africa, 2.83 for Asia, and 6.54 for Latin America.* Detailed analysis of data collected by WHO since the early 1950s indicates past trends and highlights continuing inequalities in the distribution of medical manpower.

AbstractIn February of 1972 earth-orbiting artificial satellites revealed the existence of a greatly increased area of the snow and ice cover of the north polar cap as compared to all previous years of space age observations. Some scientists believe that this may have presaged the onset of the dramatic climate anomalies of 1972 that brought far-reaching adversities to the world's peoples. There is mounting evidence that the bad climate of 1972 may be the forerunner of a long series of less favourable agricultural crop years that lie ahead for most of the world. Thus widespread food shortages threaten just at the same time that populations are growing to new highs. Indeed, less favourable climate may be the new global norm. The Earth may have entered a new ‘little ice age’. Perhaps this future period will not be so extreme as that around 1700 AD, but it seems likely, at least, to be a cooler period resembling the hemispheric climatic regimes of the period from 1880–1920.
