AbstractHow relevant is science and technology education to the needs of developing countries? Having been copied from advanced countries the systems tend to concentrate on isolated pure science subjects and Uttle is done to relate these to immediate socio-economic problems. Science education of the 1980s in developing countries should give greater emphasis to technology, local scientific achievement, social problems and the intellectual ability to solve them, and the diversification of education and training to improve the productivity of young people. This implies new approaches to the teaching of S&T providing a challenge to both educators and policy-makers.

摘要:

AbstractScience, technology and mathematics education is of fundamental importance and requires high quality teachers. Strategies are put forward for increasing the number and quality of STM teachers, improving the inservice training of these teachers and providing professional leadership and school policy to encourage excellence in teaching. Most countries in the Commonwealth cannot hope to tackle all these areas alone, but co-operation among professional organisations and national centres to develop and evaluate the strategies should be encouraged.

AbstractWomen have a history of under-achievement in science and science-based occupations, especially in developing countries. Many influences are responsible for this, including parental conditioning, school curricula, teachers' attitudes towards girls, and sociocultural patterns. These environmental situations must be changed if the present dominance of men in science is to reversed. Women can bring their caring nature to scientific practices and this needs to be encouraged. With properly planned strategies girls could be attracted to science-based occupations.

AbstractSingapore does not have a compulsory education system but most children are attending school at the age of six. Scientific subjects are limited by curriculum time and the demands of written examinations, so out-of-school science activities have become very imporfllnt in teaching practical science. Freedom from the bounds of school, the specialised knowledge of professional scientists and seeing science in action has proved interesting and entertaining. Science fairs are organized in which school children exhibit projects; quizzes help them to use knowledge in problem solving. These activities are mainly supported by the Singapore National Academy of Science and the Ministry of Education.

AbstractThe eighteen cases, drawn from the author's twenty years' experience, cover technology transfers arising from aid, commercial transactions, and government research institutes. Between them, they illustrate the need to think and plan whether the technology is needed in the fust place (or eg is it being imposed because of the politics of aid or the personal desires of the Head of State); is it compatible with the existing local technological infrastructure and with the local culture (and, if not, can it be made compatible); and is the local decisionmaking process suitably informed and organised to make soundly-based decisions? The first few cases are relatively simple; the last few raise many complex issues. The article concludes with checklists of points to be considered in any technology transfer.

AbstractWhen aiming for innovative industries, should governments encourage small firms, or is the dynamism mainly in the large corporations? This brief article summarises some evidence showing that small firms often play major roles in developing new technologies for new products, for later takeover by the corporations — assuming that capital and other entry requirements are not prohibitive.
