AbstractThis paper studies the changing pattern of research sponsorship, classifying it into pure, applied civilian and applied military types. Over 200 papers are surveyed from the 1961–81 issues ofPhysics Review Letters. A significant relative decline is found in university, military and industrial sponsorship.

AbstractThis paper focuses on women's roles in rice production, post-harvest work and marketing, and the implications for raising rice production and expanding productivity. It underlines the need to view rice production systems and women's roles within them in the context of their wider physical, social, economic and political environment, so that programmes and projects can use resources more efficiently. Using data collected mainly through case studies undertaken in Africa, the paper examines the different aspects of women's roles in traditional rice farming systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

AbstractThis paper argues that policies for modernization of horticulture must recognize the true role of women and that they should seek to strengthen and to support that role. Analysis is made of women's involvement in vegetable, fruit and flower growing. Income-generating activities suitable for women are suggested and recommendations of innovative approaches and meaningful training for women in horticulture are presented.

Trimiz's book,A Guide to Records Relating to Science and Technology in the National Archives of India: A Ramp study. (Published by Unseco and NISTADS, New Delhi, India, 1983.) The Foreword, written by Professor Rahman, explains why this field has, up until recently, been neglected in India. In the section ‘Background to research’, Professor Trimizi, explains the problems in approaching this subject.
