SummaryThe predictive value of class II DQ and DYA polymorphisms of the bovine major histocompatibility (MHC) complex (BoLA) for the incidence of disease in dairy cattle was estimated in a sample of 196 progeny‐tested AI bulls of the Swedish Red and White breed. The BoLA DQ and DYA types of the bulls were determined by analysing restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). Breeding values of bulls for clinical mastitis, all diseases including clinical mastitis and diseases other than clinical mastitis were used as measures of disease resistance or susceptibility. The relationship between MHC polymorphism and bull breeding values for disease resistance was evaluated statistically by linear regression analysis. A significant association between the haplotype DQ1Aand susceptibility to clinical mastitis was revealed. No other DQ haplotype nor the DYA locus had a significant effect on any of the disease traits studie

SummaryEvidence is presented for six genetic systems of goat red cell blood groups. The A system presently consists of one specificity, two alleles, two phenotypes (A1 and no‐A1) and appears to be homologous to the A system of sheep. The B system, like its homologue in sheep, is very complex. Fourteen of 21 specificities detected in the present study, i.e. B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B9, B10, B11, B14, B15, B16, B17 and B20, belong to the B system which involves a large number of phenogroups (31 different B phenogroups identified in 26 sires).Because of their homology with sheep C and R systems, two other genetic systems of goat blood groups are named C and R respectively. Each of the two goat systems is presently a one blood group specificity, two phenotype (C12 and no‐C12; R and no‐R detectable on the red cells) two allele system.Two specificities, namely E6 and E18, belong to a genetic system called E in which four phenotypes are under the control of two alleles codominant and one recessive at a single locus.The F system involves but a single pair of alleles and two phenotypes (F19 and no‐F19).Because of its low frequency in the goats tested, the X13 specificity remains una

SummaryTwo lines of White Plymouth Rock chickens that have been divergently selected for 8‐week body weight for 31 generations were compared for patterns of DNA fingerprints (DFP). Digestion of DNA withHinfI and hybridization to Jeffreys' minisatellite probe 33.6 resulted in DFPs that were relatively similar within lines (bandsharing = 0.50) and less similar between lines (bandsharing = 0.22). Analyses of scorable DFP bands produced by mixing DNA from individuals within lines indicated that 48% were line‐specific. SummaryGenetic polymorphism of bovine lysozyme (LYZ) genes was investigated by analysing restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The analysis revealed three RFLP loci designated LYZ1, LYZ2 and LYZ3. Each system included two or three allelic variants. Evidence for close genetic linkage of the three loci was found. There was also a significant linkage disequilibrium among the three loci in a sample of about 200 breeding bulls from one breed. No statistically significant association was found between LYZ RFLPs and breeding values of bulls for disease or milk production traits.

SummaryPolymorphism of an α‐protease inhibitor, PI3, in pig serum samples was detected using 2D agarose gel (pH 5.4) — polyacrylamide gel (pH 9.0) electrophoresis. Evidence was obtained that the five variants observed (A, B1, B2, C and D) are under genetic control by codominant alleles (Pi3A, Pi3B1, Pi3B2, Pi3Cand Pi3D) at one autosomal locus. Variants A, B1, B2 and C inhibited chymotrypsin; there was no appreciable inhibition of trypsin and papain. Variant D did not inhibit chymotrypsin, and therefore its classification as a PI3 variant was put in question. PI3 typing was not possible in about 50% of the studied pigs since in those cases the PI3 variants were either too weak or absent. SummaryVarious electrophoretic techniques, immunoblotting and inhibitions of trypsin and chymotrypsin were used to study the variability of serum proteins in farmed red deer,Cervus elaphusL., of Czechoslovakian origin. Easily interpretable polymorphisms were observed in transferrin (variants A, B1, B2, C) and vitamin D binding protein, GC (variants D, F, I, S). Great variability was observed in the protease inhibitors PI2, PI3, PI4, PI5 and PI8 and in unidentified zones in the vicinity of albumin, but no genetical or physiological interpretation for this variability is yet available. The majority of the species were polymorphic at the transferrin gene locus,Tf.The clustered distribution of allelomorphs indicated some evolutionary continuity within certain taxonomic families, but this continuity was unexpectedly less apparent within genera.

SummaryGoat alloantisera and bovine blood typing reagents were used to characterize eight erythrocyte antigen specificities in Norwegian goats by cluster analysis, absorption and family studies. Most of the goat sera were produced by injecting dams once or twice with blood cells or blood from their own kids. The characterized specificities were designated N1‐N8. The two specificities N5 and N8 were recognized both by goat alloantisera and by reagents against the bovine factors E′1and E′2(N5) and I (N8), which are allelic factors in the bovine B‐system. In goat families, the two specificities also behaved as alleles. Consequently, the locus or gene system coding for these specificities was called the B‐system of goats. The six other erythrocyte antigens were provisionally assigned to six separate loci. SummaryRestriction site heteroplasmy involving the enzymesNcoI andXbaI was detected in the mitochondrial DNAs of two individuals of the marine fishSciaenops ocellatus. This represents only the sixth documented example of mitochondrial DNA restriction site heteroplasmy in animals. Two heteroplasmic individuals were found in a survey of nearly 750 individuals, suggesting that in most studies the incidence of mitochondrial DNA site heteroplasmy may be too low to be routinely detected.
