Summary.Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the swine 21‐hydroxylase (CYP21) region was conducted on 31 unrelated SLA class I typed pigs, mainly Large Whites, including 15 haplotypes. Ten haplotypes were from SLA genotypic homozygotes and five were from SLA class I phenotypic homozygotes. DNA digestion withHindIII,TaqI andPstI, and hybridization to a 4–5‐kb swine CYP21 genomic probe yielded respectively two, four and three RFLP patterns. Six patterns were identified with combined RFLP. In addition, analysis of the CYP21 region in families comprising several SLA recombinants demonstrated that the CYP21 gene lies in the DNA segment between the SLA class I and class II regions. These overall results reinforce our previous conclusion about the existence in the pig of a single 21‐hydroxylase gene. Summary.Biochemical methods were used to analyse B‐F and B‐G antigens of the chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC). In a panel of 12 inbred or partially inbred chicken lines the MHC haplotypes, originally defined by serological and histogenetical methods, were compared. Using monoclonal 18‐6G2, allele‐specific B‐G patterns were obtained by immunoblotting. Comparison ofB‐G12andB‐G2revealed a shared banding pattern, but additional products were detected forB‐G12. The B‐F products ofB2andB12had identical IEF patterns. The identical B‐F products and partially shared B‐G products might explain the serological cross‐reaction between these haplotypes. In addition, the IEF pattern ofB‐F21appeared similar toB‐F2andB‐F12,but the partial proteolysis map showed a clear difference. Although two B‐F bands could be detected per haplotype, no evidence for the expression of more than one B‐F locus was found. Summary.Genomic DNA isolated from blood and semen of dairy cattle with known k‐casein (k‐CN) genotypes was subjected to Southern blot hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using up to 14 restriction endonucleases. k‐casein genotypesAA, ABandBBwere identified usingHindIII andHin ftwhile genotypes with k‐CNCand k‐CNEwere misidentified. Direct sequencing of the PCR product (k‐CNEE)showed a substitution of guanine (k‐CNA, B) by adenine (k‐CNE) which creates aHaeIII restriction site. Summary.A1.2‐kb bovine DRß‐like cDNA clone (BoLA‐DRB3) was isolated from a peripheral blood lymphocyte cDNA library utilizing a human DRß cDNA as a probe. BoLA‐DRB3 was found to have a high degree of nucleotide sequence similarity (96.8%) with a previously sequenced bovine DRß‐like gene (Al). It is believed that BoLA‐DRB3 and A1 represent distinct alleles of one of the three bovine DRß‐like loci. Sequence comparison of BoLA‐DRB3 with genes representing the other two bovine DRß‐like loci. resulted in moderate degrees of sequence similarities (83.1% and 86.3%, respectively). Comparison of the relative abundance of RNA transcripts of the three bovine DRß‐like loci by Northern analysis of lymphocyte RNA indicated that BoLA‐DRB3 is the most actively transcribed of the three bovine DRß‐like genes. Summary.PGD (6‐phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) gene frequencies were reported in wild pigs,Sus scrofa,of three subspecies, i.e. Japanese wild pig,S.s. leucomystax,Ryukyu wild pig,S.s. riukiuanus,and Formosan wild pig,S.s. taivanus.Five phenotypes (A, AB, B, AC' and C') were observed. The C' variant was found only in theS.s. leucomystax,and may be identical to PGD‐C reported by Archibald&McTeir (1988).
