Summary.Two antisera, B‐442 and R‐2046, were produced by immunizing offspring with purified peripheral blood lymphocytes from a parent matched for the ELA‐A specificity carried on the unshared haplotype. Absorption analysis demonstrated that these antisera contained at least two families of cytotoxic antibodies, one directed against antigens present on T and B cells, and a second directed preferentially against antigens present on surface Ig positive cells. Immunoprecipitation studies using these antisera demonstrated that both antisera contain antibodies specific for glycoproteins with molecular weights characteristic of class I and class II MHC antigens. In lymphocyte typing tests of unfractionated lymphocytes, only the class I activity was readily detectable since the class II activity killed less than 25% of the cells.Family studies demonstrated that these antisera recognize products of genes linked to the ELA system. Based on two recombinants in an extended family it became apparent that the specificities detected by B‐442 and R‐2046 are not products of the ELA‐A locus, but rather they are products of at least one other locus, defined in this paper as ELA‐B. In this family a third recombinant was found between the A blood group system and the ELA‐A locus. Summary.Pig, horse and dog plasma proteins, separated by horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (pH 9.0) and electrophoretically transferred to nitrocellulose membranes, were tested for cross‐reaction with antiserum to human plasma α1B‐glycoprotein (α1B). The results showed that one previously reported polymorphic plasma postalbumin in each of these species (pig PO2, horse Xk and dog Pa protein) was homologous to human plasma α1B. In the light of the previously known genetic linkages in these species, this implied: (1) α1B gene is close linked toPhi, PgdandHal(halothane sensitivity locus) loci in pigs; and (2) α1B gene is linked toMElandPhiloci in horses. Summary.Serum samples from 412 Spanish wild rabbits were analysed by starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Three different transferrin (Tf) phenotypes (A, AB and B) were observed by both methods. The occurrence of two codominant alleles (TfAand TfBwith frequencies of 0.89 and 0.11 respectively) at an autosomal locus (Tf) was supported by the population data on genetic equilibrium. Electrophoretic mobility differences between the Tf variants A and B could not be explained by differences in sialic acid or iron contents. Each of the two Tf variants were shown to have two sialic acid residues by neuraminidase treatment. These variants had similar affinities for iron, and iron binding did not lead to the conversion of one variant into the other.

Summary.Two bovine haemoglobin β chains, electrophoretically identical with the βAchain of Herefords, were obtained from Ongole and Banteng,Bos javanicus, cattle. The amino acid residue differences of the two β chains were compared by electrophoresis, cation‐exchange and reverse‐phase chromatography, amino acid analyses, and Edman degradation in comparison with βAchain. The results showed that two β chains differed from the βAchain of the Hereford breed by the substitution of serine with threonine at the β43 position. No other difference was found between the two chains and βA. This new β chain type was termed βA Zebu, which forms a possible evolutionarily transitional type between the βAand the rare variant βD Zambiafound previously in African zebu cattle. Summary.By the use of isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels serum samples from 146 Alaskan wolves were studied with regard to transferrin (Tf) and esterase (ArE) polymorphism, comparing the phenotypic band patterns with those of selected Norwegian dogs. The study revealed Tf and ArE polymorphisms in the wolf with phenotypic band patterns being indistinguishable from the corresponding ones in dogs. This suggests the occurrence of the same two commonTfalleles in the wolf as in the dog. In the ArE system the results are consistent with the occurrence of three alleles which also occur in dogs whereas a fourth allele, so far not seen in dogs, is seen in Alaskan wolves.

Summary.A polymorphic determinant on the surface of canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) has been identified using the murine monoclonal antibody W3G10. The determinant, which has a molecular weight of approximately 39 Kd, is associated with DLA‐Dwl (w = workshop designation), ‐Dw3, ‐Dw4, ‐Dw10, ‐Dsea1 (sea = Seattle designation) and ‐Dsea9, but not ‐Dw8, ‐Dw9, ‐Dsea4, ‐Dsea10, ‐Dsea 16 or ‐Dsea17, and segregates in Mendelian fashion. There does not appear to be any linkage disequilibrium with currently recognized DLA‐A, ‐B or ‐C alleles. Cytotoxic effector function was eliminated when W3G10 positive alloantigen primed PBMC were treated with W3G10. However, cytotoxicity was not affected when W3G10 negative PBMC were used, thus further confirming polymorphism. Summary.In all, 217 primiparous goats were each injected with blood cells from their own newborn kid. Eighty‐five goats were given mononuclear cells, 61 were given leucocytes and 71 received whole blood. The goats were injected one, two or three times before collection of sera. Sera were also collected from 42 non‐injected, primiparous goats. The sera were compared with regard to their potential value in class I histocompatibility typing. The percentage of potentially valuable sera was highest in the group of animals injected twice with whole blood (66.7%). However, this percentage was not significantly higher than the percentage in the group of animals injected once with whole blood (54.7%). It is concluded that injecting primiparous goats once with whole blood from their own newborn kid, is a rapid and easy method, which gives a high yield of alloantisera with potential value in class I histocompatibility typ

Summary.Twelve equine protease inhibitory alleles, PiE,H,J,K,L2,O,P,Q,R,V,X,Z, have been characterized in terms of isoelectric point, molecular mass and inhibitory activity to bovine trypsin and chymotrypsin by ISO‐DALT electrophoresis. Protein maps for 20 Pi alleles including those of the eight ‘Thoroughbred’ alleles (PiF,G,I,L,N,S1,S2,U) have now been determined. Five pairs of alleles, S1/S2,G/K,L/L2,P/R and U/Z, possessed varying numbers of common proteins ranging from one protein in the case of G/Kand L/L2to six in the case of U/Z. Summary.Investigation of the plasma protease inhibitor system (Pi) in the Arabian and quarter horse breeds and re‐examination of the standardbred breed resulted in the recognition of two new Pi alleles, designated E and L2. Summary.Data are presented demonstrating that high concentrations of complement protein C4 in sheep plasma are associated with a particular class I OLA specificity. By way of contrast, a similar association could not be demonstrated between C3 plasma concentrations and OLA specificities. These data support the hypothesis that gene(s) determining C4 plasma concentrations are linked to the ovine MHC.
