Summary.Class II genes of the bovine major histocompatibility complex have been investigated by Southern blot analysis using human cDNA probes for DQα, DQβ, DRα and DRβ. In this report restriction fragment length polymorphisms ofDRα andDRβ are described. The polymorphisms were interpreted genetically by analysing five paternal half‐sib families of the Swedish Red and White Breed, comprising altogether 28 offspring. Using the restriction enzymesBamHI,EcoRI andPvuII, three DRα and three DRβ allelic fragment patterns were resolved. TheDRα andDRβ genes thus appear to be much less polymorphic than the previously describedDQα andDQβ genes. Also, the observed linkage disequilibrium betweenDRgenes was less pronounced than that betweenDQgenes, whereas the association betweenDRandDQhaplotypes was very strong. Summary.Brush borders, enterocytes, or both preparations obtained from the small intestine of 345 pedigreed pigs, carrying components of seven breeds, were tested by adhesion assayin vitrowith 6–32 enteropathogenicEscherichia colistrains, each expressing one of the three K88 pilus antigens, K88ab, K88ac and K88ad. With few exceptions, all pigs were classified as belonging to one of four adhesion phenotypes: I – corresponding to K88ab(‐),ac(‐),ad(‐); II – K88ab(‐),ac(+),ad(+); III – K88ab(+),ac(+),ad(‐); and IV – K88ab(+),ac(+),ad(+). The non‐adhering phenotype I was found to be the most frequent among the pigs tested, with the exception of one commercial herd, and this phenotype seems to be inherited as a recessive trait. The remaining three phenotypes are adhering, or are susceptible to adherence by one K88 variant, K88ad (phenotype II), by two variants, K88ab,ac (phenotype III), or by all three K88 variants, K88ab,ac,ad (phenotype IV). Phenotype II was found to be at low frequency, whereas III and IV occurred with similar frequencies. While the prevailing phenomenon was the bacterial adhesion to all, or none, of the brush borders, some pigs exhibited both adhering and non‐adhering brush borders, a mixed adherence phenotype. Preliminary segregation data, obtained from the F1 generation, seem to indicate that phenotypes III and IV correspond to two haplotypes with genes at two or three closely linked loci respectively. Summary.Clear interspecies differentiation between the chromosomes in pig‐mouse somatic cell hybrids was achieved by using the THA‐technique for the cytogenetic analysis. The assignments ofLDHBandMPIto pig chromosomes nos 5 and 7 respectively, reported previously, were confirmed by analysis of 34 hybrid clones. TheLDHA, PEPBandPGM1genes were assigned to pig chromosomes nos 2, 5 and 6 respectively. Summary.Twelve blood proteins and enzymes were tested for polymorphism in a herd of fallow deer,Dama damaL., bred for meat production in Western Germany, to investigate the genetic constitution of the population. Although an enzyme polymorphism was detected (Catalase) for the first time in this species, electrophoretic variation is very low in comparison to other large ungulates. Possible explanations for this finding, such as recent inbreeding and a past genetic bottleneck, are given. The relationship between low genetic variation in biochemical marker systems and fitness is discussed.

Summary.Isoelectric focusing with carrier ampholytes in ultrathin polyacrylamide gels and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in a discontinuous buffer system were used for the separation of sheep transferrin variants. For identification of the different iron‐binding sites of transferrin a stepwise urea gradient, different degrees of iron saturation and double one‐dimensional electrophoresis were used. Isoelectric focusing results in an increased resolution of the Fe0‐transferrin, Fe1‐transferrin and Fe2‐transferrin region. At the level of Fe0‐transferrin and Fe1‐transferrin the variants I, A, G, B, C, D, M, E, Q, P can be identified. The method is especially suitable for genetic studies. Summary.We have developed a microagglutination test for typing rhesus monkey erythrocytes that is sensitive, accurate and easy to perform. The technique requires only μ1 quantities of antiserum and cells, and agglutination is easily detected using an inverted microscope. An advantage of this technique is that the typing plates can be stored at ‐70°C without loss of activity. The results of typing over 400 rhesus blood samples with this technique were 95% concordant with results using the standard microtitre agglutination technique. Summary.An erythrocyte leucine aminopeptidase (Rbc LAP) electrophoretic polymorphism was detected in Italian wild boars,Sus scrofa.Such a polymorphism has not previously been reported in the domestic pig. It is suggested that this locus could be a marker for genetic differences between the domestic and the wild forms ofSus scrofa.

Summary.The Third International Workshop on Lymphocyte Alloantigens of the Horse was held on 25–27 April 1984 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Twelve laboratories from five countries participated. The principal purpose of this Workshop was to determine the phenotypic and gene frequencies of the 10 equine lymphocyte antigens (ELA) and a non‐ELA lymphocyte antigen, ELY‐2.1, in several breeds of horse. A total of 86 alloantisera characterized in previous workshops were tested against lymphocytes from 1179 horses. In addition, several experimental antisera were also tested against the same panel of lymphocytes. As a result of analysis of these data, the Workshop recognized two new equine lymphocyte alloantigens: W11 of the ELA system, and ELY‐1.1, an antigen not linked to the ELA
