We compared lymphocyte transformation to respiratory syncytial virus in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and in healthy controls. Lymphocyte transformation was decreased in MS in the presence or absence of autologous plasma, adding to the evidence that cellular immunity to viral antigens may be broadly impaired in MS, and does not occur uniquely for any single virus.

The extracranial blood flow seriously complicates the interpretation of dynamic cerebral studies. To eliminate this, we used a blood pressure cuff placed around the head in 50 patients with no evidence of cerebrovascular disease. The pressure in the headband was increased to 30 mmHg above the patient's systolic pressure, and the first 60 sec static scintigram was taken exactly 3 min after the injection of99mTc‐pertechnetate. A second 60 sec static scintigram was taken without pressure in the headband at 6 min after injection. After correction for diffusion of tracer into extravascular compartments we could still show 13% reduction in counting rates over the hemispheric regions and 30% over the convexity regions during application of the pressure headband. With the Xenon method, the application of the headband appears to have insignificant influence on the results of cerebral perfusion. In order to elucidate the sympathetic activity of the uninhibited neurogenic bladder, controlled cystometry before and during the influence of alpha‐ and beta‐adrenergic agonists and antagonists was performed on patients with normal and uninhibited neurogenic bladder. Alpha‐agonist increased the pathological findings in the cystometrogram of the uninhibited bladder with increase in intravesical pressure, decrease in capacity and increase in the amplitude of the uninhibited contraction, but had no effect whatsoever on the normal bladder. Alpha‐antagonists improved the uninhibited bladder with decrease in intravesical pressure, increase in capacity and decrease in amplitude of the uninhibited contraction, and decrease in intravesical pressure in normal bladder. Beta2‐agonist improved the uninhibited bladder too, but was proved to be inactive on the normal bladder. To investigate whether the muscle fibre area and the proportion of fibre types in a biopsy specimen are representative of the muscle, seven specimens from the anterior tibial muscle were compared with seven necropsy specimens including the whole cross‐sectioned anterior tibial muscle. The fibre area of the transverse section differed greatly between biopsy and necropsy specimens, and also between different regions of the necropsy specimens, probably owing to different degrees of muscle fibre contraction. Relative measures, the coefficient of variance for the mean fibre area and the differences in size between type I and type II fibres, proved to be reliable. The proportion of fibre types varied greatly between adjacent fascicles and in different regions of the necropsy specimens. The mean proportion of type II fibres can vary from 7–30 % in two biopsies from the same muscle. Measurements of CSF‐albumin, and S/CSF‐albumin in two groups of patients with small and large infarcts failed to show BBB damage to albumin in about one half of the patients. No significant difference was found between the two groups of patients in regard to the above‐mentioned parameters. The localization of the infarcts (close to the CSF or deep in the brain) did not influence the S/CSF‐albumin. No correlation was found between the S/CSF‐albumin and the time interval between the onset of the stroke and the lumbar puncture within 96 h. Experimental hepatoma of the rats was induced by chronic administration of 3'‐methyl‐dimethylamino‐azobenzene. The folate level of the hepatoma‐bearing rats tended to be low as compared with that of normal controls, and the co‐existence of folate deficiency and reduced motor nerve conduction velocity of the dorsal nerve trunks appeared not uncommon. The hepatoma‐bearing rats revealed the disturbance of serine to glycine conversion in serum, and folate administration to them prevented electrophysiological neuropathy along with normalization of serine to glycine conversion. Therefore, the reduced motor nerve conduction velocity could be at least in part the result of a metabolic impairment due to folate

The prophylactic effect in migraine of femoxetine, a 5‐HT‐uptake inhibitor, was compared to that of placebo in a double‐blind group‐comparative study. A total of 59 patients, referred to the department from general practitioners, was stratified according to age, sex, duration, and frequency of attacks and then allocated at random to treatment with either femoxetine or placebo. Each patient was treated for 12 weeks with 200 mg in the first week and 300 in the remaining weeks. Ten patients on femoxetine and four patients on placebo failed to complete the study.Headache index as well as number and severity of attacks showed a significant reduction with time. The patients on femoxetine showed the greatest improvement over time. It was, however, not statistically significant. Direct comparison between femoxetine and placebo revealed no statistically significant difference.Three patients in the femoxetine group withdrew due to side‐effects combined with lack of therapeutic effect. Other side‐effects were slight and infrequent. They did not interfere with the treatment.These results indicate that femoxetine could be useful in migraine as a prophy
