The mobility of the immunoglobulins G, A and M, β‐trace protein and γ‐trace protein on isoelectric focusing of serum and CSF was determined by immunofixation using specific antisera. Polyclonal IgG migrated as multiple bands between pH 4.7–8.6, polyclonal IgA as multiple bands between pH 4.9–6.1 in CSF and serum. IgM could not be identified in normal CSF or serum. β‐trace protein gave three bands at pH 8.0, 8.4 and 7.4–7.5, respectively, while γ‐trace protein gave one single band at pH 9.5‐>9.5. Isoelectric focusing and agarose gel electrophoresis of CSF and serum revealed similar frequencies of oligoclonal bands in multiple sclerosis (100% with both methods), infectious CNS disorders (38 and 23%) and other neurological diseases (8 and 10%). In selected cases with unsure CSF oligoclonal bands on agarose gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing displayed definite oligoclonal bands. In contrast to agarose gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing revealed evidence for oligoclonal bands in serum as well as in CSF in 41% of the multiple sclerosis patients, indicating diffusion from CSF to serum. In 4 cases with gammaglobulin bands appearing in both CSF and serum on agarose gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing revealed normal CSF and serum protein patterns at pH above 6.4 where most IgG is migrating.

The diagnostic value of sphenoidal electrode EEG recordings in patients with seizures characteristic for epilepsy with complex partial symptomatology was assessed in a study comprising 404 patients; 71.3% of the patients had seizures with automatisms and amnesia, and 28.7% had psychic seizures with subjective phenomena such as hallucinations and illusions. A total of 59.6% of the patients had diagnostic EEG changes in routine waking or sleep EEG. In sphenoidal EEG recording including thiopenthone activation, diagnostic changes were found in 40.5% of the patients without specific changes in waking or sleep EEG, the chance of a positive finding being more than five times higher in patients with automatisms than patients with psychic seizures. Apart from cases where surgical treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy is considered, sphenoidal electrode EEG recording, including intravenous thiopenthone activation, should be performed in patients with seizure phenomena raising suspicion of epilepsy with complex partial symptomatology but where waking and sleep EEGs fail to demonstrate specific abnormalities.

The purpose of the present communication was to study the corrective effects of low daily thyroxine doses, on the cerebellum biochemical maturation in propylthiouracile (PTU)‐treated rats during the early postnatal life. The corrected hypothyroid animals were compared to the normal, hypo‐ and hyperthyroid ones. The protein, RNA and DNA cerebellar contents were evaluated at 6, 10, 14, 18 and 35 days old animals.At all ages hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism decreased cerebellar protein, RNA and DNA contents, except in 35‐day‐old hyperthyroid animals, where DNA content returned to normal level. In these two experimental groups, protein/DNA and RNA/DNA ratios were higher than those of controls at 10 days and lower at 35 days.In hypothyroid animals treated by corrective doses of T4, cerebellar protein, RNA and DNA contents and DNA concentration were not different from hyperthyroid animal values at all stages, while protein/DNA and RNA/DNA ratios were higher than those of hyperthyroid animals.Administration of physiological doses of T4 to hypothyroid animals led to the same effects as higher doses in normal animals. Thus, neonatal hypothyroidism seems to lower the sensitivity threshold of the cerebellum to thyroid hormone

Investigation of several endocrine functions was performed in seven patients with dystrophia myotonica (DM). All patients had hyperinsulinemia. Whereas the four female patients had normal pituitary‐gonadal function, all three male patients presented evidence of a primary gonadal failure. Thyroid function was normal in all patients. Four patients displayed abnormal diurnal variations of cortisol secretion. Basal prolactin levels were elevated in three patients, one of whom also had consistently elevated levels of growth hormone. In eight epileptic patients receiving chronic antiepileptic treatment, a study of the excretion in sweat of phenytoin, phenobarbitone and carbamazepine was performed. All three drugs were found to be present in sweat. Phenytoin sweat concentration was found to correspond to the free fraction in plasma and to be independent of sweat flow. Phenobarbitone sweat concentration was found to increase with increasing sweat flow. Regarding drug level monitoring it is proposed that under changing climatic conditions the phenomenon may be of clinical significance.

The relative frequency of different types of epilepsy in accordance with the International Classification of Epilepsies is reported, concerning 1,508 consecutive outpatients with epilepsy, who at the time of investigation were at age 15 years and above.The investigation showed a marked preponderance for partial epilepsies as against generalized epilepsies; partial epilepsies with complex symptomatology were especially frequent, contributing by more than one third of all cases.
