Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were studied in 62 patients with cerebral infarct (CI) and 18 with transient ischemic attack (TIA).In 46 males with cerebral infarct, pre‐beta‐lipoprotein was significantly higher, and beta‐lipoprotein significantly lower than in healthy controls. In 14 males with TIA, cholesterol, triglyceride and pre‐beta‐lipoprotein were elevated. In 16 females with CI, pre‐beta‐lipoprotein was elevated. (The female TIA group was too small to justify statistical analysis).The alfa‐lipoprotein values did not differ significantly from control values in any of the patient groups. These data therefore do not suggest a low alfa‐lipoprotein to be a risk factor in ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICD).It is demonstrated that differences in body weight between patients and controls may fundamentally influence the comparison of lipids and lipoproteins.The generally higher lipid and lipoprotein values in males with TIA than in males with CI are explained by a lowering effect of the cerebral infarct itself.It is concluded that the role of plasma lipids and lipoproteins in the development of ICD is not yet established. Six menstrual cycles and three 1‐month periods were studied in seven patients with epilepsy. The patients all had had anti‐epileptic treatment for a long time. In each case, the dosages had been costant for at least 1 month prior to the start of the investigation.Blood samples were taken every second day. Phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, estradiol and pregesterone were analyzed. The serum levels of the anti‐epileptic drugs were correlated to the plasma hormone concentrations.No correlations were obtained between the plasma hormone concentrations and the serum levels of the anti‐epileptic drugs. Brain stem auditory evoked potentials have been recorded in 40 normal subjects aged 13–48 years, by stimulating monaurally wiht random stimulus interval. The male subjects have latencies of the waves III‐VII, which are significantly longer than female subjects (P<0.0005), the elongation increasing from 0.09 to 0.44 msec from wave III to VII. The female subjects have amplitudes significantly higher than male subjects, although the variations are very wide. Recent studies suggest that levodopa treatment reduces the excess mortality due to Parkinson's disease, found to be three times that expected in the general population. This will affect the equilibrium state of the epidemiology of Parkinson's disease. The predicted increase in prevalence of Parkinson's disease was calculated according to two mortality patterns, one the same as expected in the general population and the other 1.5 times that expected; the proportional increase in prevalence is 1.8 and 1.4, respectively. The predicted increase in the duration of the disease is 6.3 or 3.2 years. As a consequence, there will be an increase of patients with longterm levodopa treatment difficulties and with Parkinson's disease symptoms not treatable with levodopa, e. g. dementia. This seriously warrants the research of new approaches in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Brain stem electric responses (BSER), evoked by acoustic stimuli, were investigated in 29 patients with multiple sclerosis and compared with the responses in a control group of 26 young adults without neurological disease or hearing defect. The procedure included monaural and binaural stimulus presentation of single clicks and pairs of clicks. In the evaluations the vertex‐positive Jewett I, III and V response components, and the vertex‐negative “FFP7” peak were considered. In the assessment of the BSER components, the FFP7(the vertex‐negative 7 ms far field potential following the Jewettvwave) proved to be the best single component with respect to reproducibility in normal subjects. In addition the FFP7was the single most consistently abnormal component in the patient group. Determination of the latency of the Jewett components and the interpeak conduction times, however, contributed further to the disclosure of the abnormal cases. Five of the patients whose hearing was impaired were considered separately. Of the remaining 24 patients, 20 (83 %) had BSER abnormalities. All female patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) from an epidemiological area of Southern Lower Saxony completed a questionnaire in connection with a standardized neurological examination.The family status of these 179 patients differed significantly from the expected distribution. MS patients were more often single (observed 24, expected 16.5) and divorced (observed 13, expected 5.3). The degree of disability was higher and the duration of the disease longer for the group of divorced patients. Married, widowed and divorced patients had a lower mean number of children (1.63) than would be expected from the general population (1.91). This difference results from a higher percentage of married women without any children and from the small number of families with more than three children.204 out of 250 children were born before disease onset, 46 during the disease. The percentage of spontaneous abortions and congenital malformations was similar for the pregnancies before and during the disease.46 % of the patients in the reproductive age used contraceptive methods, most often oral contraceptives (21 %).The influence of pregnancy and oral contraceptives on the course of the disease was investigated in 446 female patients. In addition to the 179 patients mentioned above, the data of 267 female patients could be gained from a central data pool.In the whole material neither pregnancy nor oral contraceptives had an effect on prognosis – defined as the degree of disability reached after a known period of illness. The patients with pregnancy before disease onset and intake of oral contraceptives during the disease exhibited a higher degree of disability compared to the corresponding groups of “no pregnancy” and “pregnancy during the disease”.Young patients seemed less disabled when taking the pill, a finding which needs further prospective inve

Stab‐wounded ethanol‐intoxicated and non‐intoxicated rats were studied with respect to the effect of postoperative dexamethasone treatment on blood‐brain barrier dysfunction to bovine albumin. In ethanol‐intoxicated rats, fluorescence microscopy revealed an increased area of extravasation of fluorescent tracer, compared to non‐intoxicated ones. No significant effect of dexamethasone treatment was observed in non‐intoxicated rats. Ten patients with confirmed tuberculous meningitis were seen at Meilahti Hospital, University of Helsinki, in 1966–1977. Six of the patients had a positive CSF culture for M. tuberculosis, and a positive CSF smear for acid‐fast bacilli was found in one case. On admission, seven patients had an altered state of consciousness, five complained of headache, and nuchal rigidity was noted in two.
