Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) were studied in a control group of 72 subjects and in 60 patients with multiple sclerosis. The recording system consisted of a visual stimulator for pattern production on a commercial TV connected to an EMG machine for displaying and averaging of the response. The normal values of latency, the upper limit of normality and right‐left eye differences in our control group were compared with those given by different authors. Likewise a comparison of the positive VEP results in MS was carried out. The reasons for the variability of results were briefly discussed and the importance of control studies for each laboratory starting VEP recording was stressed. Two new components of the human SEP upon stimulation of the contralateral median nerve at the wrist have been identified. Such components have been called N16and N17, according to their polarity and latency. N16and N17, as well as the N14‐P15complex, are generated by separate subcortical dipoles. Particularly, they are supposed to be far‐field reflections of the activity of the dorsal columns nuclei or the medial lemniscus (N14‐P15), the thalamus (N16) and the thalamo‐cortical radiation (N17). Ethanol has been shown to aggravate the blood‐brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction in cerebral trauma and in cerebral gas embolism, possibly by changing the endothelial cell membrane. No difference in protein extravasation was found between intoxicated and control rats under nitrous oxide anesthesia after the injection of bicuculline, a drug that hemodynamically gives rise to high blood pressure in combination with cerebral vasodilatation. In contrast there was a statistically significant increase in protein leakage in conscious intoxicated rats. The fact that ethanol increased the vulnerability only in conscious rats might indicate that nitrous oxide and ethanol have a common effect on the endothelial cell membranes or that nitrous oxide neutralizes an action of ethanol. Protein leakage induced by acute hypertension is more severe in rats anesthetized with nitrous oxide than in conscious rats, a difference that might to some extent be related to an effect of nitrous oxide on the endothelial cells. Plasma concentrations of levodopa were determined after therapeutic oral levodopa‐carbidopa doses. The wide fluctuations observed in plasma levodopa levels could be considerably reduced by the addition of a slow release levodopa preparation. This kind of combination medication was given to 15 parkinsonian patients, whose earlier therapy had proved inadequate. With the combination medication, levodopa‐carbidopa, on an average 420 mg/42 mg combined with 950 mg of levodopa in slow release form, a statistically significant improvement in parkinsonian signs could be achieved without any worsening of the side effects. The stretch reflex at rest and after muscle work was studied in three cases of Eaton Lambert syndrome. After muscle work a potentiation of the stretch reflex was demonstrated clinically and electrophysiologically. The presence of muscle stretch reflexes and their potentiation after muscle work was correlated with the clinical stage of the disease. The enhancement of the stretch reflex after voluntary effort was absent in normal subjects, myastehenia gravis and myotonic dystrophy.

Reference values are presented for certain cerebrospinal fluid proteins and related indexes, based on determinations carried out on 46 patients with diffuse lower back pain using radial immunodiffusion and electroimmunoassay. A sex difference was noted in total protein and albumin values. The electroimmunoassay method with its sensitivity enhanced by the use of Coomassie Blue staining and optimal antiserum concentrations enabled a reference value to be determined for IgA in cerebrospinal fluid.

Beta‐2‐microglobulin was measured in specimens of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected from 167 patients classified in 14 diagnostic categories at an outpatient Department of Neurology. In the control group of 29 subjects without any obvious disease of the nervous system, the concentration of beta‐2‐microglobulin was 1.15 ± 0.37 mg/l (M ± s.d.). The concentration was almost significantly eleveated in the groups with fresh brain infarct, central nervous system infection, and polyneuropathy. The serum concentrations of beta‐2‐microglobulin did not differ significantly among these diagnostic categories. The mean ratio between CSF and serum beta‐2‐microglobulin was 0.79 ± 0.32 in the control group and more than 1.0 in the patients with brain infarcts, CNS infections and spinal paresis, but the differences were not statist

The results are reported of cardiological examinations, including echocardiography, in nine members of a family suffering from hypokalaemic periodic paralysis, associated with permanent muscular weakness. The studies were performed in periods between attacks of paralysis. The slowly progressive permanent muscular weakness which is found in most of the patients with hypokalaemic periodic paralysis resembles a limb‐girdle type dystrophy. Involvement of cardiac muscle is not uncommon in patients with limb‐girdle dystrophy.
