A small stab wound was made in the frontal lobe of the rat brain in order to study the amount of albumin extravasated at different times after the injury. Evans blue‐labeled bovine albumin was injected at various times after the injury. The animal was perfused with buffered saline at predetermined times and the contents of exogenous bovine albumin and of endogeneous rat albumin in the brain were assayed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis.There was an immense extravasation of bovine albumin at the time of injury and during the first 10 min post‐operatively, but a very slight extravasation during the following three post‐operative hours. At the 6th postoperative hour there was an increase in the extravasation of albumin, followed by a subsequent decrease during the 16th and 24th post‐operative hours.The amount of endogenous rat albumin present in the injured area of the brain did not change from 10 min to 3 h after injury. At the 6th post‐operative hour there was an increase in the amount of extravasated rat albumin, reflecting the increased extravasation of macromolecules during the 6th hour after injury.The results obtained indicate that most of the albumin present in the brain during the first post‐operative day is extravasated through the immediate hemorrhage at the time of injury. Previous reports concerning the treatment of symptoms deriving from prolapsed lumbar disc with systemic administration of the potent steroid dexamethasone, have shown favourable results. The present clinical study includes 39 patients with symptoms of prolapsed lumbar disc, treated in a controlled double‐blind investigation with dexamethasone or placebo. Twenty patients had provable effect of the treatment, 19 had no effect. Nineteen patients received dexamethasone (13 + effect), 20 received placebo (7 + effect). The groups were fully comparable, and the difference is not statistically significant. During a period of 3 months 50 % of the patients who improved by the treatment in either group had recurrences leading to operation. Drinking habits of 156 consecutive polyneuropathic and 106 consecutive pressure palsy patients were evaluated in retrospect. Respectively, 46 patients (30 %) had alcoholic polyneuropathy and 32 (30 %) got pressure neuropathy while being drunk and these patients were analyzed in more detail.Most of the patients with alcoholic neuropathies were men, those with polyneuropathy being older than those having pressure palsies. Pressure neuropathy coincided with alcoholic polyneuropathy in 13 patients (28%). Other medical complications of heavy alcohol drinking (i.e. liver diseases, seizures and cerebellar signs) were seen in 54 % of the patients with polyneuropathy and in 6 % of the patients with pressure palsies. Heavy drinking prolonged the disability due to pressure palsy.The present study confirms the significant role of alcohol abuse in etiology of peripheral neuropathies. Heavy drinking seems to worsen the prognosis of these neuropathies.

Nineteen hospitalized adult patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy were studied. According to their clinical status they were divided into three groups of severity. The ages and durations of the disease did not differ significantly between the groups. The groups showed significant differences in ability of daily living, amount of spontaneous myoclonus, IQ and psychomotor reaction time. In EEG the groups differed in respect to the dominant occipital rhythm and amount of myoclonic spikes but not in respect to universal paroxysms. Myoclonic spikes and paroxysms in EEG were only loosely related. The results yield a conclusion that the deterioration caused by the disease is individual and the progression may even cease. In this respect progressive myoclonus epilepsy differs clearly from many hereditary neurometabolic and storage diseases.

In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) there is not only an antibody‐dependent lymphocyte cytotoxicity (ADLC) against basic protein of myelin (MBP), as was demonstrated earlier, but also against encephalitogenic peptide, cerebrosides and gangliosides. The reaction against cerebrosides and gangliosides is not specific for MS; it is also frequently positive in patients with other neurological diseases (OND), syphilis and rheumatoid arthritis. The ADLC against encephalitogenic peptide shows a very high specificity for MS. Out of 35 cases with OND, 23 had a positive result with MBP, but only one with encephalitogenic peptide. Patients with syphilis and rheumatoid arthritis reacted negatively without exception. According to this, the encephalitogenic peptide is a highly specific antigen for MS; MBP shows less specificity. The ADLC against the encephalitogenic peptide shows a markedly increased sensitivity in MS compared with MBP. This paper presents a modified method for the EEG detection and monitoring of small focal blood‐brain barrier (BBB) lesions. The method uses high dose IV penicillin (1.2 x 106μ/kg) to produce a spike focus at BBB lesions, penicillin encephalopathy. EEG findings in 62 patients with senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDA), 22 patients with multi‐infarct dementia (MID) and 90 controls of same age and sex were studied. The SDA patients differed significantly from the controls in EEG normality, over‐all disturbance, dominant occipital rhythm, accentuation of theta and delta, fluctuations in alertness, paroxysmal activity and H‐reaction. Even the least severely affected SDA patients differed significantly from the controls in all EEG variables except paroxysmal activity. With increasing degree of intellectual impairment in the SDA group the dominant occipital rhythm became slower.The MID group differed from the controls in all EEG parameters including asymmetric findings. The EEG findings of the SDA patients differed significantly from those of the MID patients only in asymmetric findings which were more common in the MID patients.29 % of the normal elderly people had EEG alterations. Abnormalities were mild. Asymmetric findings, mainly theta activity in left temporal region were common.
