The mean activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐PX) in erythrocytes of 22 Israeli‐Jewish patients with multiple sclerosis (19.3 ± 4.5 U/gHb) was significantly lower than in a control group of 30 Jewish patients with various neurological disorders (24.3 ± 5.1 U/gHb). This observation confirms a similar finding of a decreased activity of GSH‐Px in erythrocytes of multiple sclerosis patients in Denmark (Shukla et al. 1977). These results are discussed in relation to the possibility of selenium deficiency and to the recently described genetic polymorphism and ethnic variation of GSH‐Px activity in human red cells. It is concluded that additional investigations are required in order to elucidate the cause of the decreased activity of this enzyme in red cells of patients with multiple

Two hypotheses were tested to determine whether occupational stress was related to the age at onset of Huntington's disease. Using case material drawn from four kindreds in southern Norway, occupations of affected persons were graded into three categories according to their degree of physical stress.Adjusting for the effects of related factors, grade of stress was found to be a significant contributor to the variation in onset age. Minor and severe stress were associated with earlier onset ages than moderate stress; the difference between minor and moderate grades was 9 years.The results are interpreted as conforming to the psychosocial concept of Levi, whereby both under‐ and overstimulation of sensory functions are more stressful and more potent precipitants of illness than intermediate levels of stimulatio

IgG subgroups (IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4) were determined by radioim‐munoassay (RIA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of controls, multiple sclerosis (MS), infectious diseases (ID) and other neurological diseases (OND). The proportion of IgG1in the total IgG subgroup concentration was significantly higher in the MS group compared to the other groups while the IgG2proportion was significantly lower; IgG3and IgG4did not show any consistent change. The inverse relationship between IgG1and IgG2was similar in all diagnostic groups: high concentration of IgG1was associated with low concentrations of IgG2and vice versa. Patients with a high relative concentration of IgG1in their CSF have a seven to eight times higher statistical risk to be suffering from MS than ID or OND. In the MS group only the IgG1concentration correlated with the total IgG concentration determined by radial immunodiffusion, while in controls, ID and OND each IgG subgroup correlated significantly with the IgG concentration. After World War II the southeastern part of Finland was ceded to the Soviet Union and its entire population evacuated to other areas of the country. The prevalences of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) were studied among the evacuees and compared to the corresponding data among the nonevacuated population. The prevalence of ALS among the war evacuees was two times higher than among the nonevacuated population (18.0 and 8.8 per 100,000, respectively. The prevalence of MS among the evacuees was only half of that found among the nonevacuated population, 38.3 and 73.0 per 100,000, respectively. The findings for ALS indicate that birthplace may have an effect on the later development of the disease and that there may have existed some environmental factor(s) which have made the evacuees more liable to contract the disease later in their lives. The low figure of MS for evacuees supports our previous results of an uneven geographic distribution of MS in Finland with the high‐risk areas in the western and southwestern parts of the country. A total of 251 young patients (<40 years) with stroke were admitted during a 7‐year period and investigated. These constituted 30 % of the total stroke patients admitted to this hospital. Among the young, 63 % of strokes were of nonembolic occlusive group. Hemorrhagic strokes were observed in 26 % cases. This study revealed that concurrent infection, nonspecific arteritis, diabetes mellitus and hypertension contribute very little to the stroke in younger population. The composition of the free amino acid pools in various brain tumors and in normal brains obtained at surgery or at autopsy is determined with an automatic amino acid analyzer and the results statistically evaluated. The tumors have lower ratios of GABA in the pools than the normal brain; tumors with higher GABA ratios are found in those which are in close contact with and have an invasive nature to brain tissue. In gliomas, the more malignant a tumor becomes, the more different the composition in that tumor is from that in normal brain tissue. But conversely, the ratio of GABA is highest in glioblastoma. The composition of the pool in oligodendroglioma is not significantly different from that in the normal brain. Metastatic brain tumors show the highest ratios of phenylalanine, tyrosine and methionine in the pool among the tumors and the normal brain. From the viewpoint of the composition of the free amino acid pools, like from that of the histological aspects, brain tumors seem to be classified into four groups: glioma, neurinoma, meningioma and metastatic tumors.

Geographic distribution of multiple sclerosis (MS) was defined by case/ control ratios for state of pre‐illness residence for US white male veterans “service‐connected” for MS. The Veterinary Medical Data Program of the National Cancer Institute receives diagnostic information from most of the university veterinary medical centers in the US (and Canada). The Center for Disease Control had carried out a 2‐year surveillance program for human bites by animals. State distributions for MS were compared with those for the proportion of admissions for canine distemper (CD), the ratio of CD cases to the human population, and human bites by dogs per unit of population. There was no evidence that any of the CD risk indices was positively correlated with that for MS.
