Acute hypertension was induced by adrenaline, noradrenaline or angiotensin in awake unrestrained rats with chronic indwelling catheters in a jugular vein and in the aorta. Acute hypertension increases the cerebrovascular permeability to protein to a higher extent in anesthetized than in conscious rats. When hypertension is combined with a pronounced cerebral vasodilatation, e.g. in bicuculline‐induced seizures, the protein leakage is enhanced. Conscious, unrestrained 2‐3‐months‐old rats received adrenaline or bicuculline i.v. during continuous recording of the mean arterial pressure and were killed 3 minutes later. Rats, neonatally sympathectomized by 6‐hydroxydopamine, had significantly increased extravasation of125I serum albumin in the brain after adrenaline‐induced hypertension than nonsympathectomized rats. Since transection of the cervical sympathetic trunk alone does not have the same effect, a protection of the blood‐brain barrier in acute hypertension in conscious rats may, at least in part, be mediated via the central noradrenergic innervation of cerebral vessels. Antibodies to measles, mumps, rubella and herpes simplex type 1 viruses in serum and CSF of 10 patients with acute monosymptomatic optic neuritis were characterized by imprint electro‐immunofixation (IEIF). Comparisons of the IEIF antibody patterns in serum and CSF indicated that a local synthesis in the central nervous system of oligoclonal virus antibodies took place in five of the 10 patients. Three of the five patients had a local synthesis of antibody to more than one type of virus. Oligoclonal IgG was detected by agarose electrophoresis of the CSF in four of the five patients with a local synthesis of virus antibodies. There was, however, no association between the locally synthesized antibodies and the oligoclonal CSF IgG, indicating that they account for only a minor fraction of the locally synthesized IgG in these patients. In the fifth patient, distinct fractions of locally synthesized virus‐specific oligoclonal Ig were detected by the IEIF method, although the agarose electrophoresis showed a normal pattern of CSF

Various drugs have been used in migraine to bring down the frequency of attacks. Recently clonidine hydrochloride, an antihypertensive agent, has been reported to be effective. The mechanism of action of this drug is not clear, but it is thought to act through its effect on tyramine metabolism. The clinical features of multiple sclerosis (MS) in north‐east Scotland have been examined along with an epidemiological study to determine the prevalence of the disease on 1st December, 1970. Patient information was collected from all available diagnostic indices, both retrospectively and prospectively from 1965. Every family doctor in the region contributed. The age and sex specific prevalence rates for MS in north‐east Scotland on 1st December, 1970, are the highest ever recorded. Among the 80,000 women aged 40 to 69, one in every 340 had the disease. The mean incidence rate for a 12‐year period was 5.0/100,000. A significantly better prognosis with regard to disability was found for onset with sensory symptoms, a relapsing/remitting type of course, men with long disease duration, and an initial remission period of 4 or more years. The occurrence of various abnormal neurological signs and symptoms has rarely been recorded in a large epidemiological study. Based on normative data from 40 subjects, criteria for evaluating brain stem auditory evoked potentials have been elaborated. This system contained six grades from normal to diffusely abnormal, and was used in evaluating recordings from 142 patients, including 38 patients with definite and 48 with probable and possible multiple sclerosis, 18 patients with brain stem infarctions, six patients with other organic brain stem lesions, six patients with a postcommotional syndrome and 26 patients without any brain stem involvement. A statistically significant difference was found between normal persons and patients without evidence of brain stem lesions versus patients with such evidence, as well as between subgroups of slightly and severely affected patients. The system was found useful as a way of describing recordings, in comparing groups of patients and in a follow up of a few patients.

The Schwartz‐Jampel syndrome or chondrodystrophic myotonia is a rare disease characterized by dwarfism, diffuse osteoarticular alterations, ble‐pharospasm, perioral muscular contractions and electromyographic alterations. The authors present a case of chondrodystrophic myotonia focusing mainly on facial electromyographic and cardiac findings. The electromyo‐graphy of the orbicularis oculi muscles showed abundant myotonic discharges like other facial muscles as well as muscles of the members. It was not possible to obtain true electrical silence between myotonic discharges, suggesting that the blepharospasm is a consequence of persistent muscular contraction. Thirty‐four subjects with the narcoleptic syndrome were treated with mazindol 3‐8 mg daily for 1 year. Treatment caused a sustained improvement in narcolepsy, but had no effect on cataplexy or sleep paralysis. The Babinski reflex and the CUT reflex were examined in 150 neurological patients and 20 controls. A positive CUT reflex occurred more frequently than a positive Babinski reflex in the patient material as a whole, and in different diagnostic groups. However, there was a low grade of correspondence between a positive CUT reflex and a positive Babinski reflex. There were many positive CUT reflexes in the group of normal persons. In a number of cases the examination of the CUT reflex was impossible because of lack of strength or incooperability. The study indicates that the CUT reflex and the Babinski reflex are not comparable phenomena.
