摘要:
This offering for one (1) contact hour is sponsored by the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses, which is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Eastern Regional Accrediting Committee of the American Nurses' Association. NAON has been approved as a provider of continuing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN Provider Number 03432), and the Florida Board of Registered Nursing (Provider Number 2751007), and the Iowa Board of Nursing (Provider Number 180). Awarding of contact hours is contingent upon successful (75% correct) completion of the test questions.Adults with spinal deformities now have the opportunity for surgical treatment that prevents increase of the spinal curvature as well as the achievement of partial correction of the existing deformity. The adult patient often requires more than one surgical procedure. Complete evaluation including chief complaint, past medical history, social history, and past spinal treatment history by an experienced spine surgeon will result in a recommendation for appropriate spine surgical care. Variations occur in each treatment plan; therefore, the patient must have a complete understanding of the plan individualized for him.

摘要:
Nurses need to recognize and address the many body image concerns of the adult scoliosis patient having spinal fusion surgery. Forced dependency and brace confinement during rehabilitation produce fears that can be reduced by nursing management.

摘要:
This article presents a review of the literature on juvenile idiopathic scoliosis, and includes a case study. Psychosocial adjustment using the framework of (1) general appearance, (2) developmental status, (3) school and play issues, (4) family system, and (5) psychologic coping behaviors is discussed, using a nursing process format. Conclusions are (1) the juvenile with idiopathic scoliosis has treatment needs that differ from the adolescent; (2) the parents are crucial to adjustment; (3) autonomy and self-care should be fostered; and (4) positive coping skills can be attained by nursing interventions.

摘要:
This article describes the development of a patient classification system for pediatric orthopaedic patients within the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children. The directors of nursing of 19 hospitals developed this system based upon each patient's individual requirements for nursing care.A computerized system is described, along with a cost-effective method for developing time standards. The classification form is presented along with a graphical way to effectively manage a unit with the recommended staffing. The system is currently in daily operation, ensuring efficient quality nursing care for the patients.

摘要:
This descriptive study was designed to determine the priority health care needs of the chronically ill and whether perceived health care needs vary at different stages of chronic illness. The investigator developed a Questionnaire and distributed it to patients with a diagnosis of cardiac disease, myasthenia gravis, or epilepsy. Participants were asked to rate the 69 survey items on a 5-point Likert-type scale. A final sample size of 146 was used for statistical analysis. The two priority categories identified for all stages and types of illness was Diagnostic and Treatment Information needs and Models of Care needs. Two stage-specific differences among groups were identified for the period of medical crisis and stage of diagnosis. The major illness-specific variation was that respondents with myasthenia gravis viewed all categories of health care needs as more important than the other two illness groups.
