摘要:
Parents need practical suggestions in caring for their child in a hip spica cast. An evaluation done at Mott Children's Hospital resulted in the development of a slide-tape presentation for parents, demonstrations, and plans for follow-up care. This article discusses the evaluation and offers guidelines for cast application and parent education that will improve the child's life in the cast and provide optimum ease of cast care for the parent.

摘要:
Parents are often not prepared for the frustrations, fears, and difficulties associated with their child's cast confinement. The orthopaedic nurse, as an educator and an emotional support, can help prepare the patient and family to adjust to the body cast situation and the immobility period.

摘要:
Problems of an adolescent In a spica cast differ from those of a young child, as discussed in the preceding article about John. This viewpoint discusses several areas of cast confinement that posed problems to a 13-year-old boy and his family. Most of these problems and fears would have been alleviated or lessened if the family had been educated before the boy went home. As in the case of 3½-year-old John in the preceding article, almost no information or education was given to the family.

摘要:
Traditionally, methods of dealing with a sprained ankle depended upon the severity of the injury. Now, diagnosed lateral ankle sprains can be treated similarly, employing the Air-Stirrup® support system. This method emphasizes mobilization and the patient's early return to function. The procedure for injury evaluation, treatment, patient instruction, and rehabilitation are outlined in this paper.

摘要:
During this era of “high-tech, high-touch” nursing, regularly scheduled patient care conferences can provide support and professional development for orthopaedic nurses. This article describes the evolution and unexpected advantages in the establishment of patient care conferences on a 33-bed orthopaedic unit. Guidelines are given to help nurses establish conferences in their practice setting.
