摘要:
A gallium arsenide laser was used as an optical sweep generator to display the 8521‐Å hyperfine lines of an atomic cesium beam. The largest contribution to the displayed over‐all linewidths of about 60 MHz is due to the atomic beam divergence of the order of 5°.

An ``autometric'' gyro is proposed for use in satellite general relativity experiments. The readout for this gyro does not use any intermediate reference, and therefore promises some advantage over other techniques.

摘要:
The sound velocities and their pressure derivatives of vitreous GeO2have been determined by means of a pulse superposition method at 25°, −78.5°, and −195.8°C. It was found that both longitudinal and shear velocities decrease with pressure at these temperatures. This result is qualitatively similar to that of vitreous SiO2. Although the pressure derivative of bulk modulus was positive, it was anomalously low compared with those of most other crystalline solids. The mode gamma, defined by (−dln&ohgr;i/dlnV), was calculated from the present pressure derivatives of sound velocities and was found to be temperature‐dependent. The Gru¨neisen parameter was estimated to be near −0.35 at very low temperatures from the mode gamma‐volume relation. This value agrees fairly well with the thermal Gru¨neisen parameter based on thermal data at very low temperatures.

The Seebeck coefficient, thermoelectric powerQ, was measured in ceramic &agr;‐Nb2O5with respect to platinum over a range of temperature of 700°–1400°C and a range of ambient oxygen partial pressure of 1.0−10−5atm. The data are interpreted on the basis of electrons moving in a narrow conduction band.

摘要:
Local changes of indices of refraction observed in poled single crystals of ferroelectric LiNbO3and LiTaO3when illuminated by focused light have been studied. The extraordinary index of refraction was observed to decrease as much as 10−3with a focused Ar laser light of 20 mW intensity as &lgr;=0.488 &mgr;, while the change of ordinary index was much smaller. The effect is attributed to the drifting of photoexcited electrons out of the illuminated region followed by their retrapping near the beam periphery. The space‐charge field between these retrapped electrons and the positive ionized centers in the illuminated region causes the observed change of refractive indices via the electro‐optic effect of the samples.
