摘要:
A new method for studying the structure of thin films during the earliest stages of growth has been developed. Direct measurements of energy filtered, small‐angle electron diffraction intensities enables structural information of early stages in the growth of a vapor deposited thin film to be derived with greater accuracy than is possible by conventional electron microscopy. A quantitative theory is developed and curve fitting on the experimentally measured intensities enables the values of island size and the density of islands on the substrate to be obtained. The method is applied to observations of silver evaporated onto carbon and the results correlated with those of electron microscopy.

摘要:
Gamma‐ray counting experiments performed with a gated counting time which increases linearly are reported. The resultant counting distribution is flat over a large bandpass of counts as predicted earlier for photocounting experiments, or for any Poisson process, when the mean is linearly swept.

摘要:
A theoretical analysis of the solubility of interstitials in transition metal alloys is given. The change‐of‐system free energy as the interstitials are formed from the atomic state to the ionized state during the dissolving process is found to be dominated by the electronic interaction. This electronic interaction energy is characterized by the energy band structure, a rigid band model being used for the case of these bcc alloys. The minimum exhibited in the density‐of‐states curve, caused by the overlapping of subbands, gives rise to an unusual free energy change. Numerical calculations predict the interstitial solubilities in good agreement with Jones' experimental result. By comparing the solubilities of hydrogen and oxygen, oxygen should be singly ionized as an interstitial in these alloys.
