摘要:
AbstractAnalogs of the natural substance (E)‐hex‐2‐en‐l‐al which occurs naturally in green plants and is known to have microbiocidal properties were synthesized and studied with respect to their antifungal properties. Saturated and unsaturated aldehydes, alcohols, carbon acids and enolacetate were tested against various fungi by applying these compounds either over the gaseous phase or in suspension. The following ranking was observed on the basis of fungicidal activity: enolacetate of 2‐ethylhex‐2‐en‐l‐al>2‐ethylhex‐2‐enoic acid>2‐ethylhex‐2‐en‐l‐al>2‐ethylhex‐2‐en‐l‐ol. Saturated analogs showed the same order of activity as the unsaturated ones, however, they were less efficient. The effects on the ultrastructural changes were analyzed inMucor mucedoexposed to concentrations of the analogs that inhibited growth. Main effects were observed on mitochondrial and nuclear membranes. The kind of destruction caused by enolacetate of 2‐ethylhex‐2‐en‐l‐al differed from the other substan

摘要:
AbstractThe first two enzymes of the phenol degradation pathway were determined and characterized in crude extracts fromCandida tropicalisHP 15. The phenol hydroxylase (EC 1.14.13.7) was a stable NADPH2‐ and FAD‐dependent enzyme with a pH‐optimum of 7.6 to 8.0 and a broad substrate specificity. Influence of ultrasound rapidly reduced the enzyme activity. The catechol 1,2‐oxygenase (EC 1.13.1.1) had a broad pH‐optimum between 7.5 and 9.6 and a limited substrate specificity. Two active protein bands indicating the presence of two isofunctional enzymes were detectable after electrophoretic separation of crude and partially purified extracts on polycrylamide gels and specific staining for catechol 1,2‐oxygena

摘要:
AbstractFive pairs of strains ofS. flexnerieach differing in the colour of their colonies after growth on Congo red agar have been tested for their ability to cause keratoconjunctivitis in the guinea pig eye, for the presence of the 140 Md virulence plasmid, for the presence of the virulence marker antigen, and for their ability to adsorb to hydrophobic surfaces (cellulose nitrate filters and Phenyl Sepharose). The results suggest that the presence of the 140 Md virulence plasmid provides the bacterial surface with a rather high degree of hydrophobicity; exceptions have been found.

摘要:
AbstractThe Arrhenius plot of the specific growth rate μ of an asporogenic mutant ofBacillus megaterium, growing in the range of 17–37 °C followed a straight line, whose slope was affected by the composition of the medium. The maximal μ was found at 40° C in all media tested and decreased rapidly above 42° C. The portion of protein degraded also followed a straight line but reached its maximal value at 45–47° C. Its slope was affected substantially by the composition of the medium; the mixture of amino acids suppressed protein degradation at temperature lower than 37° C. The extent of the short‐lived protein fraction, degraded with the half‐time of about 1 h, was mostly affected by both — the temperature and the medium. The amount of proteins degraded per one biomass doubling was almost constant up to 37° C but was affected by the composition of the medium. At higher temperatures it increased rapidly and reached values of 20–40% of pulselabelled proteins degraded per one cell cycle. The degradation of ethionine‐containing proteins was similarly dependent on the temperature but the extent of proteins d

摘要:
AbstractAn amidase with a wide activity spectrum was purified from theBrevibacteriumsp. R 312 and studied. The purification was performed by precipitating the proteins of the supernatant fraction obtained after centrifugation of sonicated cells. The resulting proteins were submitted to a gel filtration step followed by DEAE‐Sephadex ion exchange chromatography and then by another gel filtration process. The purified amidase had a molecular weight of 180,000 and was composed of four subunits of the same molecular weight (43,000 + 2,000). Its isoelectric point was 3.5. This enzyme was able to hydrolyze a large number of amides into their corresponding organic acids and it also possessed an acyl transferase activit
