AbstractWeekly isolations from sterile and unsterile soils artificially inoculated withMacrophomina phaseoliandDiplodia maydisshowed a decline in numbers of the propagules of these pathogens. Sclerotia ofM. phaseoliand spores ofD. maydiscould not be recovered either on dilution plate or on soil plates after four weeks of inoculation of unsterile soil and after fifteen weeks forD. maydisand twenty‐five weeks forM. phaseoliin sterile soil. In unsterile soil, sclerotia‐like structures were observed with the aid of a light microscope up to the tenth week after soil inoculation by the flotation technique but their viability could not be determined due to active parasitization byPenicilliumsp. andTrichodermasp. The high number of these hyperparasites/g of soil may be responsible for the non‐detection of these pathogens in soils of some maize‐growing states in Nigeria, as well as a reduction in their longevity in soil. It thus seems, from this study, that the host tissue is the site of survival of propagules of these pathogens from one season to

AbstractDistinct protease activities were found in membrane fractions fromAcinetobacter calcoaceticusgrown on acetate‐NH+4medium until early stationary phase. Mechanical or enzymatic cell disintegration followed by membrane fractionation through sucrose gradient revealed higher activities in the outer membrane than in the cytoplasmic membrane. Using azocasein and syntheticp‐nitranilides as substrates we found very low proteinase activities in intracytoplasmic membrane fractions. However, these fractions contained a significant aminopeptidase activity which was absent from cell envelope membranes. AbstractA special approach was used to elucidate the “threshold” inducer concentration for coordinativede novosynthesis of phenol hydroxylase(s), catechol 2,3‐dioxygenase and the 2‐hydroxymuconic semialdehyde‐metabolizing enzymes which initiate phenol catabolism inPseudomonas putidastrain H. It is based on cell‐precultivation with glucose (as the carbon and energy source) in the presence of different concentrations of sodium salicylate which proved to be a potent non‐metabolizable inducer in strain H of these enzymes. AbstractA novel thermotolerant strain ofCandida kruseiwas distinguished on the basis of its typical enzymatic, growth and respiratory properties. Unlike other thermotolerantCandidaspecies and other strains of the same species, this strain exhibited diauxy on glucose. The strain also exhibited prolonged lag during growth on citrate and very low levels of NAD‐linked isocitrate dehydrogenase in comparison to the NADP linked enzyme. The capability of the strain to grow over a wide temperature range, relatively high exponential growth rate and short lag period indicate the potential of the organism for industrial application

AbstractFromStreptomyces chrysomallusvariant strains were isolated which inhibited their parent and were autoimmune to the action of the inhibitor (KRÜGEL and FIEDLER 1986). Phage‐like particles released by these variants as well as by strains ofStreptomyces lividansandStreptomyces nourseiharbouring various plasmids were analyzed by electron microscopy.
