AbstractMorphological and biological properties ofSalmonella typhimuriumphage IRA were studied. The phage is a member of theStyloviridaefamily and exhibits a very wide spectrum of lytic activity.Molecular cloning of phage genes whose expression is lethal for the host cell has been performed and consequences of gene expression have been investigated. Expression of recombinant plasmid pKI71 causes structural changes of the cell wall and also degradation of host DNA while plasmid DNA remains intact. Expression of pKI72 blocks normal cell division. The possibility of applying such recombinant clones in marking pathways of microbial contamination in water areas is proposed.

AbstractAn extracellular α‐amylase fromMicrococcus varianswas partially purified (63 fold) by ammonium sulphate precipitation followed by dialysis and separated by molecular exclusion into three components with molecular weights ranging from approximately 14,000 to 56,000. The amylase had a pH optimum of 7.0 and apparentKm of approximately 0.5 mg ml‐1for starch. The enzyme activity was stimulated by Ca2+and Mg2+ions. AbstractThe cryptic low copy plasmid designated as pIMB R8 was isolated from an industrial strain of the chlortetracycline producerStreptomyces aureofaciensR8/26. Using restriction endonucleases the pIMB R8 plasmid was characterized to have 15 kb. Subcloning of theBamHI fragments of pIMB R8 into replication probe vector resulted in the identification of the replication part. The 0.7 kbBc/I –Bg/I fragment is sufficient for normal replication, but produces about fourty times high plasmid copy numbers than the original pIMB R8. 摘要:

The host plant genotype significantly influenced the nodule Lb content in all of the combinations examined between 5 alfalfa (Medicago sativa) cultivars and 5Rhizobium melilotistrains inoculated, on the contrary not the bacterial genotype. The inoculation with the strains exhibiting an increased activity of uptake hydrogenase caused an elevation of the nodule Lb content. By IEF 4 major Lb components were found. Their proportions were changed throughout the nodule development.

AbstractTwo isolated basidiomycetes mould culturesPolyporusBH1andPolyporusBW1and two standard white rot fungal culturesPleurotus ostreatusandPolyporus versicolorwere cultivated under submerged conditions on whole (untreated) bagasse for protein production. Some factors promoting better bioconversion were studied and selected. NORKRAN's medium at pH 5.0 with 1.0% bagasse of 80 mesh particle size using an appropriate quantity of inoculum, supplementing medium with an amino acid, without addition of any vitamin, etc. gave best results.

AbstractFive organic materials,Calopogoniumsp., rice straw, wood sawdust, fresh guinea grass and poultry manure, were added to soil in a field with a recent history of high stalk rot in maize caused byMacrophomina phaseolinaandFusarium moniliforme.The two stalk rot organisms reacted differently to the organic amendments. All the amendments significantly reduced the incidence ofFusariumstalk rot disease. Amendment of soil with freshCalopogoniumleaves had almost no effect in controlling the incidence ofMacrophomina phaseolina.Organic amendment with poultry manure stimulated the disease. The other amendments appeared to be equally effective in checking the disease. Suppression of the disease appeared to be related in increased microbial activities.
