We seem to spend most of our time as psychologists in helping other people to look at themselves and to re‐assess the world about them. This conference gives us an opportunity to look at ourselves for a change, and to consider the world about us. If we do step back for a moment we cannot help but sense the undertones of mistaken ideas about psychology. We may choose to ignore these attitudes altogether, and this is occasionally the most effective method of dealing with opposition, or we may pass off criticism as the deep inner rumblings of a basically insecure person. There comes a time when we should face criticism squarely. We may then have cause to thank our critics, for by challenging our fundamental principles they can make us re‐examine ourselves, our theories and our techniq

Recent studies of social attitudes suggest that an individual, in expressing prejudicial opinions and beliefs, is exposing aspects of a deep‐lying, self‐consistent mental economy. Ethnocentricism and politico‐economic conservatism are seemingly influenced by an underlying authoritarian attitude, which implies implicit antidemocratic trends and what have been termed pre‐Fascist leanings. Experimental studies on the perception of time using the ‘psychophysical method of reproduction’ with visual stimuli of various lengths have been reported (12, 13, 14, 15). In such studies the field has been limited to investigations concerning intervals and in a few studies to the estimation of duration. But data on temporal duration appear to be too scanty to permit definite conclusions. There are few studies with auditory presentation. One such reports an important finding: ‘An increase of intensity of sound leads to overestimation of its duration and to obtain the same relative effect of over‐estimation the level of intensity should be stronger than the extent of duration’ (10). A report on the perception of the duration of sound of increasing intensity indicates that temporal perception is not independent of the processes which intervene during the time perception (5). In an investigation where observers were required to estimate five time‐durations, one by one, it was concluded that estimates rise approximately linearly with visual presentation though a reverse trend appeared in case of auditory presentation (3). The effect of auditory and visual background on the estimation of duration show that under control conditions, durations of 1, 2, and 4 sec, were overestimated, 8 sec. was reproduced correctly while 16 sec. was underes

The limited body of knowledge which at present constitutes the subject matter of the educational profession can be expanded only by the use of carefully controlled research projects designed to discover and verify the existence of educational truths. The experimental study of education in Australia has been hampered by the failure of teacher‐training institutions to provide for the presentation of suitable statistical techniques which the average student is capable of acquiring and by the type of researcher whose published studies in the field of education are of doubtful value because basic assumptions underlying the statistical techniques used in the investigations have not been considered or met. With the growing interest in the applications of psychology to professional practice there has been an increasing tendency in New Zealand for the educationist to seek the help of the psychologist in a wide variety of educational problems. This help has been given mainly by the setting up of clinics in the education and psychology departments of the Universities, and by various government departments, and by the provision of staff ancillary to these clinics. The result has been the growth of a system of psychological services intended to assist the teacher and others both in difficulties that arise in the classroom and in making the change from primary to post‐primary school and later to work.
