摘要:
AbstractThe respective merits of the ‘compound reflex’ and the ‘congenital impulse’ theories of instinct are discussed. The author contends that while the evidence shows innate action patterns of the compound reflex type to exist, these are not sufficient to account for adaptibility of much instinctive behaviour. The ‘impulse’ view however is rejected because it assumes innate knowledge of the goal. Also there are no objective states of need such as those often assumed to underly impulses, the notion of ‘need’ is a relative one—relative i.e., to policy. The deficiencies of the ‘compound reflex’ view are to be remedied, it is suggested, by the recognition of mental qualities and of
