This study investigated the relationship between rater characteristics, rating errors and rater accuracy. Several types of rater characteristics were studied: personality, cognitive and job‐related variables, and rater beliefs about human nature. It was hypothesized that rater beliefs would correlate significantly with both rating errors and rater accuracy and that there would be a significant relationship between accuracy and rating errors. Using a sample of 119 registered nurses from a large urban hospital, this longitudinal study investigated the nomological network of career commitment by: (a) determining if a distinct measure of career commitment could be operationalized, and (b) examining whether such a measure showed a different relationship to withdrawal cognition scales than measures of other work commitment concepts. The study also tested the importance of situational and individual difference variables in predicting career commitment.

Goal‐setting research and applications of goal setting to organizations are critically examined along a unidmensional/multidimensional continuum. Four relatively unexplored areas in the goal‐setting paradigm are considered in detail: (a) the distinction between quantity and quality goals and performance measures, (b) conflicts inherent in goal‐setting processes, (c) individual versus group levels of analysis, and (d) laboratory versus field research support for the goal‐setting paradigm. The resultant research needs suggest limits to the application of goal setting as well as some needs regarding theory building and research

Ratings of suitability for training as Naval Officer were obtained from each of four assessors both before and after the final consensus discussion of a selection assessment centre. Analysis was conducted of those cases where three assessors agreed on their initial rating. The probability of a shift after the discussion by the exception to the majority rating was related to (a) whether the exception's rating was initially above or below that of the majority; (b) whether or not the majority rating was high on the scale; (c) the Officer rank of the exception. There was also a significant interaction between (a) and (b) (above). These results are discussed in terms of group influences on decision making.

How good are managers at predicting their own job mobility? A one‐year follow up (n= 1082) to a large scale survey of British managers allowed respondents' original predictions of their own likely job changes over the coming year to be tested. Results showed expectations were predictive of actual attainments well above chance level, more so for employer changes than for promotions and other job changes, but the level of prediction in general was not high, only equivalent to correlations of between 0·2 and 0·3. Most managers, it seems, have inaccurate perceptions of their short‐term career futures. The implications are considered for the relationship between intention and behaviour, ‘the illusion of control’ and biases affecting judgement under uncertainty. It is suggested that career development practice would be enhanced by a more realistic and open analysis of uncertainty and its causes. The paper reports the results of a research study dealing with perceptions regarding standards and norms of pay equity evaluation. The research was carried out among a sample of blue‐collar and white‐collar industrial employees in Israel.The major aims were to investigate what standards of evaluation are perceived as relevant and how they are scaled, what normative frameworks guide these perceptions, and what factors account for the variances in these variables.The findings reveal the existence of considerable variances in perceptions and indicate that a number of variables specified in the hypotheses explain a substantial amount of the variances.
