Retraining and other factors associated with job finding after redundancy |

Six months after closure of their steelworks, 1655 ex‐employees were interviewed. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate a programme of retraining provided to assist redundant people to obtain new work. Job finding was seen to be associated with a combination of retraining, age and work orientation. Ex‐employees who had received pre‐closure training reported a stronger preference for their new jobs than did non‐trainees, but there were no differences between these groups in post‐redundancy wage levels. Job‐seeking behaviour was also examined and compared to the patterns described in earlier studies. Recommendations were made for retraining procedures in future redundancy

The present study attempts to find out the differential effects of supervisory behaviour on morale of blue‐collar workers (n= 200). The ‘Supervisor's Orientation Schedule’ was specially designed to determine employee‐oriented and production‐oriented styles of supervision. Morale was measured with the help of the ‘Employees’ Morale Scale' which includes four subscales (fairness of employer's policies and behaviour, adequacy of immediate leadership, sense of participation, and sense of worth of the organization). The results show that global morale scores as well as scores on the subscale of fairness of employer's policies and behaviour, adequacy of immediate leadership, and sense of participation are all significantly higher (α = 0·01) under employee‐oriented supervision. Programming languages embody two principal forms of conditional statement, the nestingif … then … else… form and thegotoform. Sime, Green&Guest (1974) compared these two and a third variety not in common use, nesting with redundancy, and they found that non‐programmers learning to write programs based on conditionals obtained best results with this last variety. Their explanation emphasized the need to comprehend a program, and distinguished between two comprehension processes applicable to conditionals: tracing through a program like a computer, and finding how a particular point in a program might be reached. They hypothesized that comprehensibility differences occurred mainly in the second process. The present experiments compared response times of professional programmers in comprehension tasks requiring either the first process (Expt. I) or the second (Expt. II). An experimental training scheme, based on methods derived from the CRAMP system, was introduced for London Transport Underground guards. The existing training period and content were not altered. The objectives were to increase the pass rate and reduce the resignation rate of trainees during training, especially of both older men and those born overseas who are less likely to leave their jobs once they have passed the training period. Comparison of conventionally trained groups with experimental groups showed encouraging trends and the experimental scheme has now been adopted as the standard training programme by London Transport.

This study examines Homans' proposition that an inconsistent status profile causes individuals to feel dissatisfied and to balance rankings at as high a level as possible on the various status dimensions being considered.The sample (n= 501) comprised a diverse group of technicians in a large federal agency. Six status dimensions were considered: knowledge, skill, responsibility, prestige, authority and opportunity for advancement. The criterion measures associated with status inconsistency included: job dissatisfaction; increased levels of interest in unionization; heightened interest in occupational certification; and reduced occupational and organizational commitment.In general, technicians possess extremely high levels of confidence in their knowledge and skill, but in self‐comparisons with professionals they do not fare well on the status dimensions of authority, prestige and opportunity for advancement. Important sources of this imbalance in the technician's status profile are identified. For a sample of 150 housekeeping and food service personnel employed in a large university hospital and their immediate superiors, several moderator candidates of the relationships between self and superior evaluations of job performance were assessed. This study's aim was to investigate preferences for different work functions between men and women employees according to their Protestant Ethic (PE) orientation and personality.It was found that men with high PE values most preferred Self‐realization and Intrinsic work satisfaction. The Economic function was least important to them. Men with low PE values most preferred Self‐realization and Social contact; their least important functions were Security and Power.Women high on PE preferred Social contact and Self‐realization and Security.
