The principles and history of the assessment centre method are briefly examined and the key nature of the simulation exercise in it discussed. Evidence on the inter‐rater reliability of evaluations based on one class of simulation (group exercises) is reviewed. Four studies are reported showing mean inter‐rater reliability coefficients for summary evaluations between 0.65 and 0.73 for two types of exercises before pooling evaluations and between 0.67 and 0.86 for four types of exercises after pooling evaluations of candidates. The implications of these results and possible ways of improving inter‐rater reliability are discussed. Explanations are sought for the small proportion of female managers in Northern Ireland. A series of hypotheses about the job involvement of certain men and women and about the attitudes of men and women towards women as managers are tested. Results based on a survey of 99 women and 79 men indicate that there are no differences in the job involvement of men and women at the same job level, and that men are less predisposed to accept women as managers than are women. These results offer some explanation for the small number of female managers in the Province.

In order to provide an understanding of the contribution made by the design of hospital wards to the well‐being of nurses at work a model is proposed for the structure of ward evaluations. Use is made of facet theory to generate the model. A questionnaire is developed on the basis of the model by combining elements of the facets to create the questions. The model also predicts a pattern of correlations between questionnaire items on the basis of the facet elements of which they are composed. The predicted structure contains a facet concerning levels of interaction, which is axial to two further facets. One of these, dealing with the objects of the nurses' interaction, plays a polarizing role, being modulated by the third facet which concerns whether the object being interacted with provides patient care and comfort directly or indirectly. Taken together the three facets provide the hypothesis of a cylindrex for nurses' evaluations.Clear empirical evidence for the cylindrex is provided as a result of a three‐dimensional smallest space analysis carried out on the responses given by 1921 nurses in 144 wards in 23 hospitals throughout England, to a 93 item questionnaire developed as the result of a series of three pilot questionnaires. The study reported in this paper tested hypotheses concerning the relationship between the individual's job valence perceptions and his perceptions of job preference and anticipated job satisfaction. Within‐subject analysis was used to examine the predictive validity of five alternative forms of a valence model. Strong support was found for the traditional Vroomian valence model and several alternatives. No evidence was found suggesting the alternative models were superior to the Vroomian model. As a by‐product of a larger investigation, this paper examines the psychosocial impact of a 1976 labour dispute among Canadian air traffic controllers. Questionnaires were administered to the controllers during the dispute and during two subsequent periods of routine operations, four and 10 months later. The level of distress, as measured by the 30‐item General Health Questionnaire, was significantly higher during the dispute than during routine operations. The labour dispute was also accompanied by deterioration in perceived general functioning, perceived health and perceived anxiety. However, no increase in use of medical services was documented in the two‐month period surrounding the dispute. Nor did the findings demonstrate any direct causal relationship between the salient issue of the dispute (i.e. the implementation of bilingual air communication in parts of Canada) and the increase in distress level during the dispute. This study compared two widely used forms of interest inventory item—the job title and the job activity. It was found that, contrary to the claims of questionnaire designers, interest patterns resulting from job titles are almost identical to those resulting from job activities. Scales employing job titles evoke marginally more consistent and stable responses amongst schoolchildren, but neither approach offers a substantial advantage in reducing the effects of perceived status or sex bias. The perception of the rewards desired in an occupation, the rewards perceived to be available in an occupation, and the perceived match of abilities to those required in an occupation are examined for male and female college students majoring in business and for female students majoring in education. The findings indicate that females choosing business as an occupation are very similar to males choosing business, in their perceptions of their desired outcomes in relation to those available in an occupation and in their perceptions of their abilities in relation to those required by an occupation. On the other hand, females choosing business show significant differences in comparison to females choosing education in all of these dimensions. The implication is that there are very few sex differences in these perceptions when choice of occupation is held constant.
