摘要:
The purpose of the present study was to investigate verbal communication patterns between the health-care provider and the client in well-baby clinics, and then to investigate how these patterns relate to client recall of health information. The theoretical rationale derives from Flanders's (1960) idea of classroom interaction as a social structure in a social process. Communication patterns between health-care provider and client were analyzed by the Flanders Interaction Analysis System (FIAS, 1965). Four hypotheses were proposed: I. The higher the ratio of health-care provider indirect influence to healthcare provider direct influence, the higher the client recall. II. The higher the frequency of health-care provider questions, the higher the client recall. III. The higher the frequency of client questions, the higher the client recall. IV. The higher the ratio of client talk to health-care provider talk, the higher the client recall. Hypotheses I, II, III, and IV were not supported. There was, however, a statistically significant inverse relationship between health-care provider questions and client recall.

摘要:
A study was conducted to determine what factors were most predictive of the quantity of nursing service and total agency service required by cardiac and cancer patients in home-care agencies. A retrospective record review on 397 patients in 9 randomly selected Connecticut home-care agencies collected demographic data on referral and payment source, support system, discharge status, primary care provider, and health status, as well as total number of professional and nonprofessional visits and length of stay. The Health Status Score, which measured deficits in daily activities and nursing problems, proved to be the best predictor. The ability of the Health Status Score to predict the need for total agency visits was particularly strong for cancer patients. The agency variable was a significant predictor of resource utilization, especially for cardiac patients. A significant limitation of the study was the inconsistency among the agencies regarding closure of records. Future research into resource use in home care depends on consistent and complete recording practices across agencies.

摘要:
A pilot study with 22 subjects was done to test instruments and refine methodology for a study of the nature of sleep behaviors among older persons of various ages. Then, mailed questionnaires were completed and sleep charts kept for two weeks by 212 healthy, noninstitutionalized subjects, aged 65 to 93. These subjects were randomly selected from a pool of potential research subjects compiled from voter registration lists. The self-reported sleep behaviors showed extreme variability, even among subjects of the same age groups. Using chi-square and a confidence level of .05, data were analyzed for age differences. Findings showed a significant increase in time in bed, total sleep time when naps were included, number and amount of naps, and number and amount of wake time after sleep onset after age 75. After age 85 there was a significant increase in sleep latency, an increase in total sleep time even when naps were excluded, and a change to an earlier bedtime. It was concluded that changes in sleep behavior are to be expected as age advances.

摘要:
Using stratified random sampling, 130 patients from three hospital units were assigned to three treatment groups to test the relationship between the frequency of changing intravenous (IV) tubing and percutaneous sites and the incidence of phlebitis. Measures of pain, skin temperature, and erythema were collected every 12 hours. Chi-square analysis indicated there were no significant differences in rates of phlebitis whether the tubings were changed every 24 hours or 48 hours. Further, there were no significant differences in the incidence of phlebitis between 48− and 72-hour site change groups. Clinically, subjects in the 24-hour tubing change groups had lower rates of phlebitis. Analysis of the relationship of other factors such as environment, IV medication (heparin, potassium chloride, antibiotics, and corticosteroids), diagnosis, and age showed no statistically significant relationships. It was concluded that more frequent tubing changes are not harmful to subjects and, in fact, may be beneficial.
