To identify learning experiences in a multimedia, independent approach from which the student may extract the greatest benefits, 60 sophomore baccalaureate nursing students were matched in control and experimental groups according to specific variables. Students in the experimental group worked independently at their own pace with modern equipment, supplemented by class assemblies; control group students were taught by the traditional classroom-laboratory-clinic method. When analyzed according to an extroversion-introversion scale and a high-low grade point average (GPA), high-GPA extroverts registered higher achievement orientation, more anxiety, and greater sell-concept scores. The experimental group reported significantly greater satisfaction with the course, interacted more with faculty, and reacted more favorably to the classroom environment. However, the study did not bear out the assumption that the faculty-student ratio would decline through use of multimedia.

摘要:
The effect of training institutional personnel to produce observational records oj patient behavior is described. Fifteen nurses were randomly assigned to three teams for training in the observation and recording of patient behavior as a part of a workshop at the University of Kansas Medical Center. At different stages in their training, each team dictated observational records from a videotape of patient activities in six typical behavioral settings within the hospital. Analysis of the coded records indicated high percentages of agreement among observers in the proportions of patient self-involvement, self-initiation of activities, and time spent alone, regardless of the kind of training received. Significant variance differences occurred among teams, as predicted, but were relatively small compared to the overall percentages of agreement.

When medical-surgical nursing was taught using a modular autotutorial approach to 40 second-year students at the Evanston Hospital School of Nursing, 55 per cent of the students preferred the media approach to the traditional lecture method, student/faculty ratio increased from six to one to eight to one, students found the media concept to be more effective as a learning device, students' high school performance and test records bore no relationship to their preference for learning, and there was no significant difference in retention of learning one year later by students who used the media in comparison with a group of students who learned via the traditional lecture method.

A three-year study of 82 graduates of a hospital school of nursing who rated themselves and whose employers also rated them on performance of 16 selected nursing activities revealed that the academic records could in no way indicate the quality of their on-the-job performance.

The mean time for measuring 47 febrile oral temperature readings was compared to that required for 47 afebrile readings. Febrile readings required an average of 6.21 minutes and afebrile readings required 8.21 minutes. The difference was significant (p < .001). For 42 matched rectal temperature readings, there was no significant difference in the average times for measuring febrile and afebrile readings (2.09 and 2.29 minutes, respectively). There were considerable differences in the individual times for measuring oral readings, but less variation was present for rectal readings.
