摘要:
To examine the impact of work experience on nurses' anticipated responses to situations involving dying and death in the hospital setting, 62 responses to a questionnaire were analyzed. Licensed practical nurses, it was found, had developed coping mechanisms to alleviate the uneasiness associated with unstructured interaction with dying patients. Among registered nurse respondents, however, uneasiness associated with such interaction was positively related to nursing experience. Experience was not significant in predicting responses of either RNs or LPNs to statements describing the event of death, proximity to a dead body, or provision of nursing care to dying patients.

摘要:
A concept attainment model of diagnosis was used to study the influence of inferential ability and restricted-unrestricted information conditions on 60 nurses' hypothesis-scanning strategies, diagnostic accuracy, and confidence in two diagnostic tasks. A selection paradigm, similar to the game of Twenty Questions, was employed, and it was assumed that verbal reports of how information was being utilized were reliable indicators of scanning procedures. Analysis of variance, t tests, chi-square analyses, and the Cochrane Q test were used in data analyses. Subjects' behavior approximated a model strategy of predictive hypothesis testing in diagnostic concept attainment tasks involving surgical complications. Neither the interaction between inferential ability and information conditions nor the effect of inferential ability alone influenced the dependent variables, although prolonged predictive hypothesis testing and unrestricted information conditions were associated with greater inaccuracies. Implications for nursing history taking and diagnosis are discussed.

摘要:
This study investigated differences between graduating seniors in two types of nursing programs—baccalaureate and associate degree—in self-actualization as measured by the Personal Orientation Inventory. The data were analyzed using t tests for the two major scales and by a repeated measures analysis of variance for the 10 sub-scales. The repeated measures model was used since many items appear in more than one scale. Baccalaureate graduates' mean scores were higher on all scales. Significant differences (p ≤.05 ≤.001) were found in one major scale and seven subscales. All factors which earlier research associated with leadership showed a significant difference.

摘要:
This study applied an analytical technique used in the social sciences to explore conceptual approaches to an understanding of the consumer participation process in health care decision making. Consumers of health services from three community health centers were interviewed to ascertain their opinions, attitudes, and perceived knowledge of the consumer participation process associated with the three health centers in the respective communities. A consumer knowledge index (CKI) was constructed, based on the interclass association between selected survey response items considered representative of the consumers' knowledge of the consumer participation process. Based on a general test of selected hypotheses using the gamma statistic, consumers with a high ranking on CKI tended to be somewhat more satisfied with selected aspects of the health centers and reported more preventive health practices. Implications of these findings and the conceptual approach for promoting and evaluating consumer participation in health planning councils are discussed.

摘要:
Based on a theoretical framework by Clough, Wittig, and Derdiarian (1973) and evidence that childhood dependence and independence behaviors continue into adulthood (Kagen and Moss, 1960), the investigators identified adult behaviors which would fit into each component Beller (1955) specified in defining dependence and independence in children. The Behavioral Checklist, an observational tool, was then constructed, based on examples of behaviors for each of Beller's components. The checklist appears to measure changes in both dependence and independence.
