摘要:
This investigation primarily sought to determine if there is any difference in the performance of nursing students when half of them have had experience in the classroom laboratory and the other half have not had this experience. The data obtained consisted of students' scores on written tests and of performance of basic nursing procedures in clinical practice as evaluated by an instructor observing the performance. The experiment was so designed as to permit analysis of other effects in addition to the method of teaching. No significant difference was found in the performance of the laboratory and nonlaboratory groups. It was concluded that one method of teaching provided as well as the other for the learning of basic nursing procedures as measured by written tests and performance in the clinical areas of the hospital.Practice, whether in the laboratory, in the clinical situation, or in both, contributed to improved performance in practical skills but made little if any contribution to understanding of material as measured by written tests. There was a significant difference in scores obtained by students when evaluated by different instructors, which may have resulted from real instructor differences or from their individual interpretations of the evaluation forms. No instructor differences were found in the written tests.A significant difference was found in the performance of both groups on the several nursing procedures used in the study, both on the written tests and on the practice scores. This may have been due to differences inherent in the procedures themselves or to differences in the material covered by the tests.

摘要:
A total of 135 nursing students, 71 from a degree program and 64 from five different diploma schools, participated in a study of anxiety change during a 6-week tuberculosis nursing experience. A scale was developed following the procedure known as equal appearing interval scale construction. Following its validation, the 17-item scale was administered four times during the 6-week tuberculosis nursing affiliation. Four major questions were asked:1. What degree of anxiety is experienced by nursing students who come to the tuberculosis teaching unit?2. Does the anxiety level change during the tuberculosis nursing experience?3. What influence does previous experience in communicable disease or tuberculosis nursing have on student anxiety?4. Is anxiety related to student achievement and performance? The conclusions reached by this study were as follows:1. Nursing students evidenced some anxiety regarding tuberculosis, but this anxiety should not be considered extreme.2. Anxiety toward the disease decreases slightly during the first two weeks of experience, then remains relatively constant for the rest of the experience.3. Degree program students with previous experience (including previous contact with tuberculosis patients) were significantly less anxious with regard to tuberculosis than were degree program students without previous experience. The same trend was found for diploma program students, but the differences were not statistically significant.4. No significant relationship was found between a student's performance and achievement and her level of anxiety.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the activities which comprised the total svork load for one week of full time teachers in the clinical field in fully accredited basic degree programs in nursing. The descriptive or status study method was used. The report was based on an analysis of time records kept for one week during the spring or fall, 1956, by 113 teachers of medical and/or surgical nursing, 61 of obstetric and/or pediatric nursing, and 22 of psychiatric nursing who were employed in 38 schools of nursing. The analysis showed marked variations within each field in the total work week, in the number reporting each activity, and in the time devoted to each activity. For all participants the average, median, and range of hours reported were respectively: 46.78, 45.5, and 26.33 to 87.83. By fields the average hours were: medical-surgical nursing, 46.9; obstetric-pediatric nursing, 46.27; and psychiatric nursing, 47.52.By major categories the participants reported an average of 13.92 hours, or 29.76 percent, of the work week for activities related to formal teaching assignment; 20.62 hours, or 44.07 percent, for activities related to clinical experience; 9.91 hours, or 20.12 percent, for work-related activities; and 2.33 hours, or 4.99 percent, for other required activities. The ratio of hours of regular class instruction to preparation was 1 to 1.37 and of class to all related activities 1 to 2.71. The ratio of hours of instruction and supervision during clinical experience to hours of preparation for clinical experience was 1 to 0.26 and to all related activities 1 to 0.61. For each hour of regular class instruction the participants averaged 3.42 hours in instruction and supervision during clinical experience. In response to the request for suggestions for adjustments in their work load to improve effectiveness, the need for additional faculty members was mentioned most frequently while more time for preparation for teaching ranked second in frequency.
