摘要:
One of the areas of present day nursing most in need of scientific investigation concerns the relationship between nursing and patient welfare. A recent study undertaken by the Division of Nursing (formerly Division of Nursing Resources), U. S. Public Health Service explored the effects of a specific nursing practice on the welfare of agroup of hospital patients(1). This research, known as the Premature Infant Nursing Project, investigated how the growth and well-being of prematurely born infants were influenced by the practice of providing continuous physical support, in the form of a rolled diaper, to the infant's body.Preliminary to conducting the Premature Infant Nursing Project, a chart of expected weight gain of premature infants during their early weeks of life evolved. The development of this chart was considered to be important because of the vital role that body weight plays in evaluating progress of prematurely born infants. Moreover, it could serve as an evaluative tool for measuring the effects of nursing upon patient welfare. Part I of this article describes the methodology used to construct this chart, and how it was adapted to a form useful to nursing personnel. Moreover, the nature of these curves are discussed and compared to the weight curves obtained by another investigator. In part II, the weight curves for groups of “sick” premature infants are presented and compared to the weight curves for “well” premature infants. Data on the food and fluid intakes of the infants are discussed in both sections.
