摘要:
This study compared the effect of use of the IPPB apparatus and use of the rebreathing tube as methods for encouraging deep-breathing and coughing. The subjects' autonomie activation accompanying each treatment was also compared. The findings demonstrated that both treatments significantly increased the tidal volume of postsurgical patients. Use of the rebreathing tube, however, was more successful than IPPB in producing a productive cough. Neither treatment resulted in' a significant autonomie response by the patients. Further studies will be necessary to more thoroughly evaluate these two treatments and others as employed in the care of postoperative patients.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a specific teaching strategy on the ability of sophomore nursing students to solve unfamiliar problems. The strategy was designed to assist the students in the discovery of concepts and generalizations. It consisted of a sequence of questions. It was hypothesized that students participating in the experimental teaching strategy would achieve a significantly higher score on a test of problem solving skills, and would choose actions which exhibit a greater understanding of nursing care than students in the control groups. It was also hypothesized that cognitive training would have differing effects on students with different academic aptitude. While the study failed to provide evidence to support the main hypothesis, it did demonstrate that when the process of discovery was emphasized students performed at least as well as did the control group on a test designed to measure understanding of nursing care. The study corroborated Taba's findings of a low correlation between level of previous academic achievement and performance on the criterion test (3).

摘要:
If a profession is to direct its progress realistically, it must do so with a full knowledge of the threads of the past which it wishes to perpetuate and of those values which, while appropriate at another time or place, are ill-suited to nursing in modern society(1).A study of role conception changes and role deprivation of collegiate nurses from three California State College nursing programs following graduation and initial employment was made over a period of approximately six months. Three Likert-type scales were used to measure the respondents' loyalty to the ideals and values implied in the concepts of service, professional, and bureaucratic roles and their felt role deprivation. Findings suggested that: 1) the bureaucratic orientation of neophyte nurses increases with length of employment, 2) this increase in bureaucratic value orientation is related to a shift from a school—or professionally-centered model to a work-centered model, and 3) role deprivation is greater for subjects retaining instructor role models than for those who shift to work-centered models.

摘要:
This study of student characteristics centered on the problem of discovering the differential attributes of two groups of baccalaureate students in nursing, registered-nurse students and basic senior students. The data covered a wide area of values, interests, motivations, and aptitudes. They suggest avenues of future research which may have long-term benefits. What immediate benefits may accrue to educators is entirely a matter of interpretation. There is evidence to support and to discourage the continuance of separate programs for registered-nurse students. Some special handling of these students seems warranted, however, on the basis of their strong professional motivations, theoretical inclinations, and postbaccalaureate plans.

摘要:
This study investigated the differences in reactions to immunization injections on the part of 31 infants aged six weeks to six months, when held by the mother or when lying on the examining table. The dependent variable was the intensity and duration of the infants' crying. There was a significant difference between the two groups (p=001) with the held babies crying less intensely than the babies lying on the table during the injection and for 10 seconds following it.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to determine if the vicarious experience of reading a book could influence the attitudes of nursing students toward comatose patients. A Thurstone-type equal-appearing interval-scale was developed and used to ascertain these attitudes toward comatose patients. Thirty junior students in a collegiate program were given this scale prior to and after readingJohnny Got His Gunby Dalton Trumbo. The students had a positive attitude toward unconscious patients as measured by the scale on both the pretest and the posttest. The scores of the students were compared using a Mann-Whitney U test. No statistically significant difference was found at the .05 level when the total scores were compared. Five categories of students were identified within the total sample. These were analyzed for attitude change at a significant level. The difference approached a .15 level when the scores of those who had seen or cared for an unconscious patient were compared.
