AbstractA scheme is described for the recovery of waste heat from stacks of gas turbine engines by means of heat‐pipe loops. The recovered energy is supplied to an absorption chiller that cools the intake air of the gas turbine engine to enhance its performance. AbstractPrediction of annual energy consumption requires the partial load performance evaluation of each component in an air conditioning system. A packed‐type or a coil‐type liquid desiccant apparatus is an essential component of a hybrid liquid desiccant system. Therefore, predicting the hour by hour performance of a packed‐type hybrid liquid desiccant system to estimate its annual energy consumption requires that the performance of a packed‐type system be known at partial load conditions. For this purpose a detailed sensitivity analysis of heat and mass transfer performance of a packed‐type liquid desiccant system is carried out to identify important performance parameters. Two output parameters — enthalpy effectiveness and humidity effectiveness — are defined to present the results. Based on the conclusions drawn from the detailed sensitivity analysis, a simple model is developed to predict the performance of an absorber and a regenerator at partial load operating conditions. Performance predictions using the simple model are compared with the predictions from the detailed analysis along with another existing model which is available in the literature. AbstractWhen exposed to high‐temperature steam over extended time periods, heat transfer surfaces in power plants can be degraded by corrosive deposits of various oxidation products commonly known as scale. Solid particles can exfoliate from these surfaces, move downstream, and erode costly power‐generation equipment, including turbine valve stems, nozzle blocks, turbine diaphragms, turbine buckets etc. In addition, the heat transfer efficiency is substantially reduced. Such effects can be severe and can significantly increase capital expenses, fuel and operating costs unless abated by various techniques, among which the most common are mechanical and chemical cleaning. In this paper we analyse the use of foams as an alternative chemical cleaning method, and use a network of parallel tubes to stimulate key process and performance variables in chemical and foam cleaning. Among the process (or control) variables are: rheological properties of the foams, foam quality, inlet flow rates, network geometry, and injection strategy. Among the performance variables are: distributions of residence times, of flow, and of quality, pressure drops, and energy requirements.
