AbstractThis paper illustrates an analysis of the performance of a solar wall as a collector storage system. the south facing wall consists of a mass of concrete/brick whose one surface is blackened and glazed, and a network of pipes (metallic or plastic) is laid in a plane from which heat can be extracted by flow of fluid in such a manner that the temperature of the plane of heat retrieval keeps constant. the collection efficiency of the system is found to be 80·0 and 60·7 per cent for collection temperatures 20 and 25°C respectively on the surface; the maxima/minima of the rate of heat retrieval (Q(t)) occurs about 12 h after the maxima/minima of solar temperature at a depth of the plane of heat retrieval = π/α1, with a maximum efficiency of 2

AbstractSelective black nickel coatings with solar absorptance (αs = 0·94) and thermal emittance (ε = 0.08) at 100°C have been developed on galvanized steel using electroplating and chemical conversion techniques. Thermal performance tests have been conducted on selective and non‐selective collectors with single glass cover. A suitable collector test assembly has been constructed for thermal performance study. Measurements have been made under clear sky conditions over a wide range of inlet temperatures. For comparison, measurements have been carried out on an identical collector painted black. AbstractThis communication presents a theoretical analysis of a shallow solar pond water heater, which is in good agreement with the experiments of Kudish and Wolf (1979) and the authors. the heater consists of an insulated metallic rectangular tank with black bottom and sides and a transparent cover at the top. After the collection of solar energy during sunshine hours the heater stores a substantial amount of heat because the top glass cover is covered by an adequate insulation in the night. Analytical expressions for the transient rise of temperature of water in the tank have been derived taking into account the appropriate heat transfer processes during day and night. These experimental results as well as those of Kudish and Wolf (1979) have been found to be in good agreement with the theory presented in this paper. the effects of one more glass cover on the top, and of the thickness of the bottom and side insulation and tank depth on the water temperature have also been studied.

AbstractA model which simulates residential energy use in New Zealand until the year 2000 has been developed. This paper describes some of the energy conservation possibilities and their effect on energy use for space and water heating. an engineering analysis made to determine the effect of various factors on energy use for space heating is first described. the information gained from many computer simulations is used to develop a quantitative relationship between space heating energy and major determinants—climatic location, building type and intensity of use. Results from an engineering analysis of a water heating unit are used to establish the energy savings due to improved cylinder insulation and lower storage temperature. A solar space and water heating system is analysed to determine the fraction of total heating load that can be met by harnessing solar energy. the analyses demonstrate that the potential of conservation measures to reduce energy use can be substantial—by raising the insulation level on the building and on the water heating cylinder, by lowering the water storage temperature, and by installing an optimized solar heating system, the energy requirement can be reduced to 0·37 times what it is today for a typical uninsulated

摘要:
AbstractDistrict heating projects are planned with the help of a standard heat load duration curve, being the representation of the most likely load pattern the system will have to meet.A systematic procedure to estimate the standard curve is set up: the daily average outside temperature density function is transformed with a relationship between this temperature and the daily average heat load, resulting in a density over the heat loads. the cumulative distribution of the latter is the day load duration curve.Because the result has to be used for capacity planning, the unitary time interval has to be small, e.g. 1 hour. Therefore, the day curve is refined by incorporating the fluctuations over the day.The hour load duration pattern is approximated analytically using the collocation polynomial technique of Lagrange.Results are in agreement with the postulated standard patterns of the literature. the paper adds to the state of the art primarily by presenting a systematic procedure to derive the curve and by expressing the curve analytically. the systematic approach allows a clear interpretation and an extension of the varous steps of the load analysis.
